They did the ratings on the '06 using lower octane fuel, or so that's what I heard.

Actually, they changed the way the ratings are measured. Back in the 60's, the HP rating was *gross*, and then in 1972, it went to *net* (as determined by S.A.E. Standard J1349) which lowered the rating for most engines and in 2005 *SAE-certified* (SAE J2723) same into being (but only on a voluntary basis) which lowered most (although some did go up) vehicles actual rating even though the engine did not change.

Here is a quaote (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsepower#SAE-certified_horsepower ):

SAE-certified horsepower
In 2005, the Society of Automotive Engineers introduced a new test procedure (J2723) for engine horsepower and torque. The procedure eliminates some of the areas of flexibility in power measurement, and requires an independent observer present when engines are measured. The test is voluntary, but engines completing it can be advertised as "SAE-certified".

Many manufacturers began switching to the new rating immediately, often with surprising results. The rated output of Cadillac's supercharger Northstar V8 jumped from 440 hp (328 kW) to 469 hp (350 kW) under the new tests, while the rating for Toyota's Camry 3.0 L 1MZ-FE V6 fell from 210 hp (157 kW) to 190 hp (142 kW). The first engine certified under the new program was the 7.0 L LS7 used in the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Certified power rose slightly from 500 hp (373 kW) to 505 hp (377 kW).

Hope that helps.

so you are saying that the engines have the same horsepower but are just rated different because of a new different standard? thanks for the reaply

I wander why the 05-06Frontier is still pumping out so much HP and Torque... i wish my tacoma had 265 horses and 285 lb-ft torque that would be nice pulling my boat. but again if it did then i would just want it to have 300 hp and 350 lb-ft torque i thought about getting a tundra when i got my new tacoma just for that extra horsepower and torque but i just like the new tacomas so much better than the tundras
