How far can my tacoma really go? #690401 01/27/06 04:45 AM

Hey guys im new to the forums here but have had severel dieing questions that i wish could be answerd from some guys a little more familiar with the tacoma line. I own a 2003 tacoma 4 door TRD off road with the rear diff. lock and i was wondering is it possible i could add 4 wheel drive without having to buy a whole new truck? Also i would like to ask about the hell i have been puttin my truck through lately...at least i think so...ive been doing alot of hunting in some back country with alot of mud with some sand or just going down roads with that black jack. Well unfortunately this evening i got stuck in the black jack and had to call a 4X4 to come get me out of my mess..but before i put it in reverse put it in 2nd low watched the rpms go to 4000 and crinched even though the red is well about 6000....i was just curious if this all of this is rough on my truck and weather or not i should just get a friends truck to do the dirty work rather than mine. I jus really like that truck and am worryed about it if im doing something wrong so i came here for questions haha.
alright well any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks

If it's your daily driver, get a beater for the trails.

Your truck is too new to find 4x4 parts to change it over; not a lot of stuff sitting in the junkyards just yet--

yep-- better off buying a 4x4 in the first place.

Decide what works for you; just my two bits.

Body Damage is Cool
Or you could just SAS it......like in the 4WD Toyota Owners Mag

Little more than just that stuff goes into it.

Well, It's the same fram as the 4x4 model. Really, exactly the same, minus the 4x4parts.

If you can get a hold of a 4x4 tranny, and transfercase, front driveshaft, front diff, and front axles, and hubs...(plus all of the other *little* things you'll need) it really should be a bolt on deal.

BUt, I have never done one myself. I've seen 4x4 Tacomas, and 4x2 Tacoma pre-runners side-by-side, and aside from the 4x4 parts, like I said before, they're identical.

If you can get the parts, Maybe give it a try if your up to the task.

But, you might be better off just gettin a 4x4 Tacoma, or older Toyota pickup for all of Your romping.

A good friend of mine did the IFS 4x4 swap on his Tacoma about a year and a half ago. Hasnt had any problems and it was his daily driver for awhile. He just bought an 06 Taco though so it has become his designated trail rig now. He did the whole thing himself in his garage I think and he told me it was pretty easy seeing as how its almost all bolt on. The only thing I remember him having to cut was a hole in the floor to put in the 4wd selector stick. Dont get me wrong, you're going to need some knowledge and a good amount of wrench time to do this. There was a guy on this forum, Mechanic58 that had done this swap. Look around and see if you can find him or any of his posts about it because I havent seen him on here for awhile. Good luck

Thanks guys yall were a great source of information....as was stated before my frame is built for the 4x4 its just something im unfamiliar with so if i were to ever do it i would definately have to get one of my gearhead friends to help me out with it....but than again its also my everyday vehicle so i might do as suggested and get a trail beater...but just out of curiosity do yall know what kind of damage is being applied to my tacoma in the mud? im sure theres friction in the brakes and everything else when mud and dirt come in to play but is that the only thing?
alright thanks again guys

Mudrunner
The danger with mud is it's corrosive to the parts it clings to in the undercarriage. If you can, the best thing is to wash you truck and its undercarriage after every session. However, there is no way to completely get around the fact that sand and mud DO cause premature wear. How much it actually causes can be debated, but I'd check your steering and suspension components on a regular basis just to make sure. Otherwise, that truck is a champ and should do fine.
PS: My truck is 2WD as well, but I've noticed I can make it through almost anything a 4X4 can make it through with the differential lock engaged and some weight in the bed of the truck. Weight in the bed is very important. If you need to, you can keep the locker engaged for awhile if you think you might hit some tough stuff unexpectedly, it won't hurt the truck at all.

Thanks man you jus told me everything ELSE i needed to know, and your observation on our trucks making it through what some 4x4's cant is so true as i have witnessed with my taco against a 2005 ford f-150 4x4 grant it, it did have street tires but never the less my truck made it much farther but i think the key point of why is that the taco has a light footprint, at least thats what i was led to beleive....but anyways thanks again
