First off has anyone removed one before??

I have everything off including all of the Head Bolts, but it still doesn't want to come off. Passenger Side by the way.

I do notice that where you can hook up a chain hoist is right behind the head up against the firewall, but can't tell if it's bolted into the Head or not.

Any Idea's??

Jon-

Did you get all the bolts? I know, I know, stupid question, but you would not be the first to start prying and then suddenly have two heads with neither being particuarlly helpful to you.

I see 8 M11 bolts (around the cylinders) and two M8 bolts (towards the front) per head.

Found it. It was 2 12mm 6 points on the back of the head holding a antifreeze line on at the firewall.

This engine is alittle confusing to me. Chiltons only goes up to 96 models.

The head has/had 8 M11 Bolt and 3 M8 bolts at the back of the head and the 2 12mm bolts holding the antifreeze line on, that Chiltons says nothing about.

Now to figure out is this head is bad or if it was the Gasket, which seems to kinda staying on both the head and the block. Pistons seem okay with just some oxidation on them as well as the heads valves. One or the other was hopefully causing no compression in no 5.

Just curious how many miles on the engine? Ever over heat?

Wondering if it is just the gasket, what caused it to go bad?

120K on the engine. I don't think it's overheated before. Bought it from a co-worker for 250. His "mechanic" tried to get the head off, but was unable. Took me about two hours thanks to the fact that he already removed half the stuff.

In looking at the Head I can see no noticeable signs of something wrong with it. Gasket doesn't show any signs of being cracked.

No Compression in the no 5. The Piston looks fine with the normal burnt oxidation on it. The cylinder walls seem smooth with no scraps and so forth.

I'm wondering if maybe it was caused by either a sticking valve or from the valve's no sealing. I took a wrench and turned the camshaft and it doesn't seem like the valves on the no5 are all the way sealed.

That would cause no compression right??

Yes, a valve not closing would definately cause a no compression situation. Now the question is why isn't the valve not closing?

Although it sounds as if you got a steal if that's all it ends up being.

Yeah i'm hoping I got a steal. The clutch was replace only 1000 miles ago.

I'm thinking that the oxidation build-up on the exhaust side valves might be causing them not to seal properly.
Rather then rebuild the Head, which I've got no real clue how to do I'm thinking I might just get a new one.

Ebay has a couple, but I'm not sure if they will fit or not.

These are about 120 bucks cheaper than ones from Autozone/napa

I did just notice something that's gonna be a real PITA. One of the head studs it looks broke off in the block. It's got only about a inch of threads on it. This is gonna suck.

im going to add another question,

Is there a part of the piston firing cycle where to of the pistons are at the same level???

Counting from front

5 6

3 4

1 2

Radiator

Pistons 3 and 5 are level, about midway in the cylinder.
Piston 1 is at the top of the cylinder. Normal???
Or do I have a broke connecting rod or something like that?

You may just have a machine shop hot tank it or acid dip it for you. You'd be surprised how clean things come out of there.

That's worth a shot Joe.

Already cleaned it up pretty good with a paint brush and some diesel I stole from my powerstroke's fuel filter bowl.
