Getting the Wheeling Fever
Great forum, good stuff all the time!
I have an 85 Toyota LB 4x4 with a 22R motor and I'm in the process of building up this truck. I have made minor upgrade that I canÆt seem to get to work. I have swapped out my basic instrument package (speedometer only) with a cluster which has a RPM gauge in it.
I cannot get the RPM gauge to work. I think the RPM type cluster that I have put in came out of a 22RE 1986 truck. All the wiring hooked up easily to the back of the instrument cluster, my question is, did I miss something or do I have to run an extra wire to get the rpm gauge to work or do I need a cluster out of an 85 truck?
Thanks

You gotta run a wire from your coil. Very easy to do.. See stock87's excellent write-up for more info.

I fused mine with a 5 amp fuse just in case, Also if your going from a 4cyl to a 6cyl, or 6 to 4 your rpms will be off, there is a white potentiometer on the upper right corner of the tach circuitry you can adjust the gauge with. You have to do this while it is installed with the plastic cover off, but luckily you can get it right while the cluster is bolted in and then snap the crystal on without taking the cluster back out, just watch the little plastic idiot light covers on the botttom and don't let them fall off before the clear cover goes on, the you have to take it all out again. Don''t ask how many times I did that... Ok, at least 8 times...sigh, at least but not for the same reason, once I forgot to hook up the spedo cable, and realized it after the whole dash was together....sad I know.

If yours is a cable type, unhook the cable on the firewall under hood, and poush it foward after cluster is unhooked. Much easier!

I have a 87 toy carburated regular cab pickup. I also have an 85 toy but it is EFI and its a extended cab model does any one know if the instrument cluster from my 85 will work in my 87. I'm curious because the 85 has the rpm gauge but the 87 does not. Thanks

It'll work no problem
Just change the oil pressure sender to one like in your '85 (or pull the one from your '85) and you might have to run one wire to the back of your cluster, but other than that, it's "plug and play".

I have pics of where to run from and too (might be on that link too), I just have to find them.

I have a 1985 4runner. I swapped out the regular gauge for the rpm type. The rpm type came from a 1985 2wd. pickup. I switched the oil sending unit and started the truck up. The oil pressure gauge does not work. The fuel level is showing past full when I only have a 1/2 tank. The temp. gauge slowly goes up to the red after idling for about 3 minutes. The only thing that is working is the voltage gauge. Any ideas would be great Thanks

My bet is the fuel guage problem is b/c of a diff size tank for 2wd vs 4wd truck?
I have this problem, swapped in a cluster from an '88 v6 4runner into my '89 4 cyl (both auto). Which btw required no re-wiring or anything.
My guage go all teh way down to empty and stays there a long time before the light comes on.

you have to change the oil sending unit to a guage type or you blow the coil on the SR5 gauge using the idiot light sender.
