Hey, thank you to everyone who gave suggestions and advice, I appreciate it. I won't be leaving for awhile yet, but I'll let you know how it goes when I do.

Just don't expect to go fast once you get up here to CO. Not only are there some good hills, but your at altitude wich makes it a little weaker. There were times i was doin 40 on the highway with my 4Runner loaded down. This was right before my rebuild though, and with the engine in need of the rebuild. What part of CO are you moving to? If it's near by and ya need a hand, I might be able to help ya out with somethin. Ya never know. . .just PM me if ya want my contact info, I'm in Colorado Springs.

Are you putting the trailer in front or behind the Toyota??

Man That's a long steep haul for a little truck.. I blew up my 22RET pulling by boat over Wolf Creak pass here in Colorado..

What part of Colorado are you moving to?? No matter what there are some steep passes coming from Cali and most are about 10000' above sea level.. I guess you could come in from Albuquerque way and that would help a little..

Don't forget that you GVWR is the combined weight of your TRUCK and CARGO and is different from towing capacity.. I'm assuming your gonna have your truck bed loaded too?!?!? If you have over size tires that's gonna kill you on hp!!

Stop bye for a beer, I'm in Monte Vista (Southern Colorado)

Body Damage is Cool
Talk to U-haul first to see if they will rent you the trailer. They've gotten touchier in the past year or two about what they will let their trailers be hooked up behind.

Neither trailer empty poses any great load to your truck. It's the loaded weight that matters. Myself, I prefer using a large trailer just for the room.

Brakes are nice, but not crucial on a small utility trailer. Electric or surge, there are pro's and con's to both.

And when you're all done looking at the one-way rental fee, go over to Home Depot or the like and consider simply buying a utility trailer for a little less money. Then you'll have one you can use forever.

As for will your truck handle it, yes. Between my father-in-law and myself, we've towed god knows how many tens of thousands of miles behind our little Toyotas. Loads of 2k and up. Interestingly, the 4x4 was the absolute worse at towing and the one I'd be least willing to tow a heavy load with. But it's only when you'd get over the one ton limit that I'd start really running into trouble with the 4x4.

Agreed....I towed a similar set-up, albeit with a 22r, when moving from Texas to Louisiana. It brought the suck, and it was a helluva-lot flatter than the drive you are taking!

Moving back I rented a truck and towed the Yota back...much mo betta!

For trailer lights, look for the adapter kit that plugs into you tail lights so you wonÆt have to cut any wires. Look for Hoppy p/n 43315 or Valley p/n 33315 for your t-connector, about $35 - $40.

Will that Hoppy p/n work for an 85 4Runner. I looked it up and showed it for 95-03 Tacoma's. The guy that posted it had a First gen as well. I just want to tow a small ATV trailer a few miles to trailheads. Many thanks

That would be me. JT Outfitters show that the Hoppy 43315 fits 1984-1994 trucks and that the 84-89 4Runners use the same tail lights so it should work. As for the Valley p/n, I'm getting conflicting numbers but here is a link to one. I can't find the markings on mine anymore and I just looked at it when I transplanted the trailer plug into my new bumper that I built.

I think i would much rather not chance it with towing a u haul trailer. I had a ford ranger, 4 cyl. 4x4, 5speed, sport package. and i towed a uhaul trailer(about 10ft x 5ft), about 60 miles, it was only half full of stuff, and I busted the rear axle housing( a mess! gear oil everywhere!) and busted one of the shock mounts on the side of the axle break. allthough that is a ford i wouldn't chance it
