hmm....consider the strength of the ranger rear axle(i doubt it was an 8.8", since they only came in the fx4 package to my knowledge) and consider the strength of the toyota 8". i can almost guarantee that will never happen towing a uhaul in a yota if the gears are set up right unless you are reving the truck up to 5k and dropping the clutch.
seriously though my dad towed a 5x8 foot uhaul trailer fully loaded from virginia beach to florida WITH HIS 05 4 CYLINDER ACCORD! you think you cant pull that w/ your truck? im still not sure if he had trailer brakes though, and it was all flat ground. but his car stops on a dime on w/o the trailer b/c its 4 wheel disc.

60/40 split works best.
Get the 6x12... It has brakes, while the 5x8 does not. I'll second that, I've towed a few things with my 4Runner and the trailers with the ebrakes are much easier to stop. Believe it or not, towing my Supra (same weight as my truck) was easier with the ebrake trailer than towing my 1800lb w/no brakes on the trailer...

I am moving to Fort Collins, once I find a job there, which is proving to be a royal pain in the ass, as most job hunts are. I haven't figured out the best way to go yet, I'll start working on that once the job is found.

I've towed our 2000+lb pop-up camper down to Carlsbad caverns (over Raton), over to Dallas, down to Houston and Galveston, and back. Did it with about 200K on the engine. The combo has been over I-70 (Eisenhower & Vail Pass) multiple times each way. You have to be willing to go 35mph in 2nd up the Georgetown-Silverplume pitch.
It has electric brakes. I don't think the drivetrain is as concerning as the brakes are.
