Water W/ My Gas?! #692830 02/03/06 07:40 AM

Hi all;

Okay, my truck has picked up a case of the stumbles as of late, and I'm kinda curious as to the cause of this "fun".

Could water be foulin' up my fuel system? I had this same thing happen back before X-mas when I took a trip in -20 weather and I didn't have my tank but a 1/4 of the way full.

This happens at driving speeds around 55-75, w/ OD on or off (doesn't matter) where the RPMs are about a little above or a little below 2k.

This doesn't seem to happen when the weather is warmer out either, if that helps.

Thanks for any signal flares that might lead me to a resolution!

If the rig is parked in a garage, you can get condensate in the tank. Science in action.

Toss a bottle of Heet in there per the instructions. If EFI, use the red bottle, not the yellow one. Easier on the injector gaskets.

-20 and a quarter tank of fuel is askin' for trouble. If you break down, you're already in a shelter; keep that tank above a quarter tank when in extreme cold conditions.

Clogged EGR's like to stumble right around those RPM's as well.

Thanks Kewl!

I kinda had a hunch that that might be the cause, and I know....shame on me. That's NO WAY to treat a Toyota...d'oh!

Thanks again for the reply!

Tiny little update on this annoying matter;

Okay, w/ this problem NOT going away, and even after I added some Heet to the gas thinking that was cause of the stumbling, I have discovered that there is a sizeable leak in my muffler. It's got a few tiny holes, which I'm sure will grow over the months, and a nice slash-like hole on the side.

The muffler is, from what I've gathered, the original one from the factory! It had a good run, but it's time for a replacement. Any leads on an affordable cat-back exhaust set up??

I still haven't found out what is causing the stumbling either. I've checked all the electrical and vacuum line connections and all seems well. I cleaned my EGR in the fall, but I'll have to pull it again just to be sure...fun-fun! Is this related to the dying muffler in any way?

Thanks!

If the CAT and the muffler are clogged then yeah, it could. If you have water in your gas tank pour a bottle of rubbing alcohol in the tank and fill her up. What else have you checked? When is it stumbling? Or maybe post a link to the other thread.

Heet is isopropyl alchohol; rubbing alcohol is about 70% alchohol and 30% water. (Check the MSDS).

I'll give the cat a looksy tomorrow, depending on what the weather will do. It hit -6 this afternoon and is currently at -20!

Well, I noticed that the stumbling didn't start until the exhaust fumes had starting flowing out of the tail pipe and all the other "exit holes" if that helps. It also stumbles (the worst) while driving down the road at about 60-65mph. It makes the truck shake. I HATE the way that feels.

Actually you can get IPA in 50%, 70%, 91%, or 99% grades. The 70% OTC grade is perfectly fine to use even though it contains 30% deionized water. My point on using OTC instead of HEET is the cost. I'm not familiar with HEET but I'd almost bet it cost more than a bottle of OTC IPA.

I mean no disrepect Kewlynx but I have a very good friend who has been a Honda mechanic for 20 years and a Top fuel funny car crew chief for 5 years. If he tells me to use rubbing alcohol to get rid of water in the tank, then that's good enough for me.

I guess my point to you is, you can use an elephant gun for dove hunting but isn't that a little bit of an overkill?

kuso, I know you said you cleaned the EGR but have you tested it with a vacuum guage? If not, I'd highly recommend you go buy a vacuum bleeder from Autozone for $30 and test the EGR as well as the EGR Modulator. Also check for fuel starvation. (i.e. fuel filter, fuel pump) Pull your plugs and see what they look like.

I should have been a little more clear on the other post about the CAT. IF it is the CAT it has to be clogged quite a bit in order to choke down the motor. If your pretty sure it is the CAT go buy a flexible straight pipe and a clamp for @ $10 and cut the CAT out to see if that cures the problem. Use some GOOD foil tape from an HVAC supplier. Not that crap they sell in the local hardware stores. Wrap the joints of the flex pipe with several layers and then put the clamps on. This seals the joints and prevents them from leaking.

PS. Don't worry about the plastic burning smell. It goes away after awhile.

if you want a quick way to check your cat, take a tempature probe, i like the lazer one myself, and let the truck warm up good. take the temp just in front of the cat and then just after it. the temp after the cat should be about 100 deg. hotter.
