I've seen metric 33" (285/75-16) tires run on factory 16x7 wheels. It looks a little odd and will probably cause you to run them a little under inflated to get the tread flat against the pavement. 16x8 is a great choice.

33x12.50-15 tires require specific wheels to clear the calipers on '01-'04 Tacomas. So you might want to look at Wheeler's Offroad for wheels that will clear on the later trucks, making them easier to sell when the time comes.
