You want to use graphite cable lube available at motorcycle shops and some auto parts stores. Mine made moise for awhile and I did nothing. ended up replacing the cable.The instrument cluster comes out pretty easy on the 1st gen runners. I beleive the 2nd gens are more work. The cable complete is a $60 to $70 dealer item for the 3vze autotrans setup. good luck

Cable lube drying up is one possibility. I would say most definately the problem. I had this issue on all three toyota p/u's I've owned or still own. I hate a loud speedo cable.
