>I have an original 1989 Montero LS It has 150,000 miles on it Looks great. ItÆs been garaged in NYC. The only dents were made by parking attendants and they are numerous. Automatic transmission was replaced this summer. Runs perfectly. Am moving to Central America. Roads are unpaved with deep ruts. Quite a few rivers to drive through. Need to upgrade for smoother ride and serious possible eventualities. Also IÆd like to bring some spare parts down, but not sure which ones are most likely to need replacing. All advice is greatly appreciated.

You dont list your vehicle info, that would help.
1996 SR From the Area 51 Skunk Works. 37"BFG Tires, 5" lift, Rock Track 4:1 Case, Tom Woods Drive Shafts, Oasis Air, Front ARB, lifted gas tank, T-max winch and lots of stuff that cost too much.

Just pulling your leg...I a born and bred new yorker.
If your going hard core of road, from what I've gathered from the mudders on this list, get bigger tires (31"), fender flares, brush guard & winch, safari rack & snorkel, passenger bouncy seat, KYB shocks, 91 power steering pump, tinted windows.
at 150k, and going someplace warm I would have your cooling system serviced (flush, rodded, new therm, pump).
I would just sell the monty and get a Nissan Patrol Diesel or Diesel Pajero. Very common in SA and super freakin pimp trucks.
gas is pricey down there and watch the octane.

the gen I's got great armor underneith... but considering where your going. have you considered bulletproof glass, armor plates in the doors, remounting the raditor on horizontially on the hood, a .50cal with turret on the top & most importantly... a bfg underneith the front seat? theres a company here in utah that turns pretty much any car/suv you can think of and turn them into tanks... delivered a coke machine (many moons ago) to them and got the grand tour. youll never guess where 99% of the go... central/south america. i guess were not to popular down there <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />.
98' BBJ Grand Laredo 5.2 locked and loaded,.01' Gen III XLS. Frankenmonty lives on in another.
