Okay, you're all gonna hate me for saying this, but I'm looking into getting e-locker's for my rig. Why is this wrong? Because I've already got dual detroits.

There's a reason for my insanity, the rear is starting to drive me crazy chirping (plus I'm watching the left rear wear almost 1.5X as fast as the rest are), and I think selectable locker's would be nice for a few reasons....

1) I bought a truck with lockers, but now wish that I could wheel w/o them, sometimes, so I can learn right. Locker's are a luxury and I should start at the bottom of the pile and learn before I depend on the rig to get me through. But, I still want locker's if I get stuck! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

2) Fix the rear chirping and tire wear.

3) While on the trail it's not THAT big of a deal, but many, many, many different threads on a multitude of forums have said that selectable's are the way to go for the front.

I have to admit I'm rather confused when it comes to e-lockers. I've read the article here on 4x4wire and have read glimpses of facts elsewhere, but would like a point of clarification or two...

I already have 4.88's, but in the article the gears were bought with the locker, is it too much trouble to buy a Toyota e-locker w/o the gears? And if so, shouldn't an e-locker (out of another Toyota 8") fit any gear set? The gears are different, but aren't the dimensions the same?

I'm planning on going to the junkyard this weekend, the local one's have an "everything half off sale" so I'm trying to get all my info before I run out of time. From what I can tell, with the minor modifications mentioned in the article any e-locker from 97 4runner's and on should fit, correct? I'm assuming a rear e-locker should work up front too, right?

I appreciate any and all help. I kinda feel like it's stupid to pay four or five hundred dollars to downgrade just so I can have a harder time on the trail, but I think I'd have more confidence in myself if I learn the right way first.

If you have V6 third members currently, then you can reuse your ring and pinion. If you have 4 cylinder third members, I do not believe that the gears can be used in the electric locker (or V6) third member. From the factory, the e-lockers are only available as complete third members. They will come with 4.10, 4.30, or 4.56 gears. 4.88 was not a factory option with an e-locker, so you are going to have to regear this new differential. You will probably be money ahead to sell your complete third members and buy some new gears.



Yes, that is correct. The only issue may be the bolt pattern on the pinion flange not matching up with your front driveshaft, but that is easy enough to fix. Toyota also made a high pinion e-locker third member that was available in the front of FZJ80 Land Cruisers. They use their own unique gears, but the raised pinion definitely helps the front driveshaft angle.

Dont forget 95-current Tacoma TRD had the same elocker. I got mine from a 99 TRD. They are more common in junkyards than 4Runners.

There are a few vendors over on pirate offering electric V6 3rds (geared) - they're about $1000 though.

How bad is your drivablity? I have a @#$@ of a time going around corners and not getting a stutter in my driveline.
