The problem we have is thinking about the Hp ratings. These ratings are at near or maximum rpm. At maximum rpm the engine you have now will have plenty of horsepower..
Your problem is the gears not the engine. If you keep the gears and put another engine in there you might have a small gain. If you replace the gears with some lower ones you will have an instant huge gain in usable hp. With 35 in tires I would want about 2750 rpm at 60 mph.
What are your rpm at 60 now?
