sounds like you've got a plug gauge for american vehicles with high energy ignition systems. i know craftsman makes 2 types, a standard(has gaps from around .018-045 or so), and a high energy type that has much larger gaps. i've got both, only a couple bucks each.

a feeler gauge will work fine, though, i like a wire gauge personally.
