They had an old yota landcruiser in there today. They were doing a SOA conversion on the front axle. They had problems with setting up the caster on it, so they ground into the axle tube, heated the tube up, put a pry-bar in the birf cup and twisted it to give them the caster they needed then welded up the ground parts. Now, is it just me, or does that seem like a little bit of booty fab, and something that doesnt seem very structuraly sound? Is it common?
Just curious...

I saw it.

It's called a cut and turn. Nothing booty fab about it. Most people dont do it because they eitehr dont know about it or dont have the skills to do it.

They dont do enough shows on jeeps? 2 of the project trucks they are working on are jeeps!

I guess there is more than one way to skin a cat, and i guess more than one way to correct caster. Thats an interesting piece of trivia to know...

Whats the other way to correct caster on a Toyota axle? Shims? With cutting and turning, you can set the pinion at whatever angle you want, and have the correct caster. You can't do that with shims.

If your doing a SOA, then you would be stupid NOT to cut and turn, since you are already doing half the work that mini truck owners would have to do (cut and reweld spring perches)

You don't see it in the minitruck world a lot because all minis are sprung over, where as land cruisers are sprung under, and a SOA is common for them.

The birf cups at the end of the Toyota axle have a tube connected to them that is sleeved by the outer housing. So all they are doing is cutting through the OUTTER housing weld, and turning the inner sleeve, and rewelding it.

Here's a good link about a cut and turn

Ok, that image, and your description cleared it up for me. See, the reason i thought it was "booty-fab" was because i thought they were simply weakening the metal by grinding it, heating it up, and then forcing the entire axle tube to twist. Now i see that they are twisting just a small portion of the tube, one that is completely free of the rest of the axle tube. My thoughts were that they would be weakening the axle tube by heating it so much that they could freely bend it.

I understand better now. Thank you.

You have got to be kidding me...have you paid attention at all? What about Cheap Jeep? Project AJ?

And anyway, thank God they are willing to do something different than the dime-a-dozen, cookie-cutter Jeep projects all the time...
