By opening the gap you force the ignition coil to build a higher voltage potential and the larger gap between the center electrode and the ground bar allow better access to the air fuel charge.

Only works on high end ignition systems where the coil has a greater energy potential.

you may want to try going back to the factory recommend gap and see if that helps any. probably won't have much effect.
