Anyboby know what would cause the oil to blowout the oil filter gaskets I overhauled a 20R and we have blown out three oil filter gaskets is there a pressure release valve that is sticking? Or does it need to be adjusted? I am clueless at this point so help would be greatly appreciated.

What type of filters? As I understand it, the Toyota oil filters have the pressure relief/bypass valve inside the filter: - http://yarchive.net/car/oil_filters.htmlThat could cause problems if running a filter designed for a domestic vehicle which may have the bypass valve external to the filter.

so are you saying that I should get a filter from Toyota for that? because the time the engine ran with a champion filter and ran alright. I tried a purolator and it blew out and two Frams

I generally run Purolator filter speced for the 22R on my '85. But if the filter is speced for use on Toyota, it should have the internal bypass valve, I think they open around 22psi. Might be some other issues, though.

Not on the stock oil relief valve.
There's a spring and plunger under that cap.
All you can do is check to make sure that the plunger isn't stuck/seized.
I did see on a post over at the pirate4x4 forum about an adjustable relief cap that allows you to raise the oil pressure, I don't know if it will let you lower it though.

well.........it is not the plunger <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> and right now we are not sure what thell it is. we installed a oil gauge to see how high it would go we used another stock spring in place of the one that is there and it went well over 50+ PSI. any other ideas? we are open for suggestions.
