Body Damage is Cool
Well , 2 hours outside today , and I got absolutely nothing accomplished I took out my new bushings after I cleane dup all the rubber that was in the holse , and I discovered there is also a metal ring that goes around the rubber. So , I now have about 1/16 of an inch of a metal sleeve , stuck inside the holes.I tried pounding them out , using a socket thats the size of the sleeve , no go.I then tred to chisel them out , all I did was mangle one of them big time. They are siezed on there so bad , I have no idea how to get them out. They look like part of the cast part they are so rusted in there My next thought is to get something to use to hone them out , just grind the metal down until its the right size to stick the new sleeves in there with the bushings. At the rate I'm going , gonna be another month just on the lower control arms

Everytime I lose time like this it sets me back big time. Now the hunt begins to find something that can hone those 4 holes out , and hopefully quickly so I don't waste another large amount of time.I'm thinking they had a special tool that pulls these things out when its still all in one piece , the inside sleeve , bushing , and outside sleeve.Probably some kind of press , then press them back in.Of course I don't have the luxury of all these special tools , just a backyard mechanic.

How about going in with a Sawzall and a fine metal blade, cutting a longitudinal slice through the bushing shell. Once you have that slot in there, I should think a few whacks with a hammer would knock 'em loose.

They do show the tool in the shop manual, looks like it wouldn't be too hard to fashion a remover installer from some black pipe and some good grade 8 bolts/nuts and washers. How were you gonna install the new ones ?

Litnin or Jerry, if yer lissenin... is that tool available anywhere you know of ?

Barak, did that Moog kit come with the bolt/nut/washer? or just the bushings themselves?

Joe (Bigpoppax2) had a very difficult time with his also, if I remember correctly. PM him to see what his solution was, or maybe he'll post here soon.

Hi Jeff , the Moog kit only came with the bushings , one kit does both sides of the control arm , so it requires 2 kits to do both.I was just gonna use a big socket and pound them in once I get these other ones out. That seems to be the big job , getting them out

I'll try messaging Joe and see how he got his out.I think that tool would only work when the whole bushing is in there , not just the little metal sleeve that goes around the rubber and inside sleeve.Always something to slow a guy down

Roll Me Over
I feel your pain.

I used a torch and got the rubber out of the inner sleeve and then used a sawzall to cut the sleeve. A porta power a chisel and more sawzalling got it out.

The new one installed just as tight.

I ended up using a flapper wheel on a drill to hone the inner sleeve on the frame out. Then I put the bushing in the deep freeze overnight and put some lubrication inside the frame sleeve and tried pressing the bushing in, no dice.

Put it back in the deep freeze while I honed the frame even more. This time I had the porta power on it while I was hitting the frame with a hammer. Every time I'd hit the frame the bushing would move about 1/16". So it was slow going but I got it in.

This is a job that the factory never intended a shade tree to do.

Joe

I'm thinkin' that THIS ONE looks more like something that would work for the bushings. You might need to fashion some tubes/adapters, but it appears "beefy" enough to work.

Plus, this one is good for U-joints too...

I just wish I had enough money for "one of everything" !

Its all good My mechanic came over with his cut off torch and cut the sleevs out in a matter of minutes , then he lent me his press , so within an hour out with the old , in with the new They do fit very tightly , but they are supposed to be like that , and he also said that they should sieze in there to a certain point for them to work.I have one of the lower control arms back on now , one lower ball joint , and half a torsion bar One thing I noticed right away is the lower control arm is pretty tight to move , not like before where it was easy to move up and down with the bushings being old.The new bushings make a huge difference

The good thing is now that the thing that set me back a lot is done , I can make some good progress again.By the weekend I should have the front suspension all put back together. After that the rear axle goes in , then I can start on my fuel and brake stuff Then the engine goes in and gets tested before the body goes on.
