Doh! Fram is all I ever bought on any of my rigs for the past 20 years. Except for the air filter on the sportie which is OEM.

This is a link to an old Web page, but it's still extremely interesting. A guy took apart several oil filters to look inside. After you read how the Fram filters are made, you might want to stop using them.

I saw that study years ago too. And yet I continued to use Fram filters and I never had any problems. Then I started lurking here...

They are also "down" on Fram products. In fact, I think the guy who did this original filter study also participates in this oil forum.

What persuaded me to stop using Fram filters was the fact that you can obtain Purolator filters cheaper and they are better quality.

If you are really concerned about your oil, and the determination factor of when to change it, do an oil change, at the end of the 3000 miles send it HERE they will do 4 tests on your oil, including if your oil has started to breakdown. After using them for 1 year, I now only change my oil 4 times a year and use a K&N oil filter. The number one reason is because I use fully synthetic Mobil 1. Synthetic oil doesn't break down in the same manner as conventional oil. Unles of course you encounter a High heat situation. Such as an overheat. But either way, if you overheat your engine or even come close, you really should change your oil anyways. For example, I will change my oil on the first day of Winter, first day of Spring, Summer, and Fall. I started to notice that when I changed my oil only twice a year there was a very very small amount of water in it. Now that I change every season, there hasn't been any water in it at all.

Here is another thread that has been ongoing for awhile.
Good link as well.

Personally, I use anything but Fram filters. Either factory or Purolator most of the time.

For oil, I usually use Mobil 1 5W-30 or 0W-30 in the winter. Sometimes I use Shell Rotella synthetic if I can find it. Of the synthetics, Syntec is the worst one that is readily available. It's not a bad oil, just almost all synthetics are better.

I go woth Mobil 1 15,000 mile oil. I have 170,000 or so miles on my truck. I change the oil every 15,000 miles. On a long trip (1,000 miles), it will use about 1 quart of oill since synthetic is thinner and escapes a little, but I have not openend my engine ever. It runs well and I just got tired of changing oils. I use the same oil in all my trucks.
