Clutch pedal adjustment question...

Can someone explain to me the clutch pedal adjustment... My recently rebuilt engine (with new clutch) doesn't seem to engage much at all... When I release the clutch pedal, it just starts to engage about 90% of the way off the floor... When I try shifting into second gear, the clutch just spins... If I turn the truck off, put it in 5th, and torque the crank pulley, the clutch slips... it doesn't grab. Does it sound like I need to adjust the clutch pedal up or down? I'm wondering if I installed the clutch incorrectly? Everything seemed straightforward... I got underneath and verified that when the clutch is pressed, the shift fork is moving without binding... I also bled the clutch lines for good measure. Anyone know how to adjust the clutch when it slips so bad?

the clutch dosent really have an adjustment in this year ... only a "pedal height" adjustment ... almost sounds to me like the disc is in backwards .

How do you tell if it is in backwards? I was a little unsure, even with the factory service manual in front of me...

Seems like all the clutches I've put in had 'flywheel' or PP marked on disc But the only difference I can think of is the splines/springs stuck out more on pp side than fw side Will it fit backwards?
Anyway, if its an adjustment thing and not intall problem, look at slave cyl. Try unbolting it or remove rod and see if there's pressure on fork w/o depressing clutch.
I know factory didn't use adjustable rods, but I've seen'em installed in these trucks. Who knows why
BTW, did you use a "kit" that came w/PP and TO bearing, etc?Did you have flywheel resurfaced? Did they mill it correctly?

Sounds to me like the throw out bearing is partially depressing the clutch pressure plate static before the pedal is pressed.
Was the replacement throw out bearing the same dimensions as the original?
Unbolt the slave cylinder from the tran to see if the clutch is partially depressed.
If you find it is, you need to verify two things
1) do you have the correct pressure plate
2) do you have the correct throw out bearing.
The clutch disc will go in either way, but he correct way is with the dampener spring offset facing the pressure plate side (toward you)

I purchased the clutch kit from clutch kit which includes all necessary parts... I may have the clutch disc in backwards, as I was a little confused which way it went in... I have to pull everything to fix a leak anyways, so I'll double check things while I'm in there... So to make sure I understand, there will be more "stuff" sticking out on the pressure plate side of the disc, rather than the flywheel side? Thanks, Ken

Yes, the side that is virtually flat faces the flywheel and the side where the dampener springs stick out face you (pressure plate).

Not sure on a 84 but my 80 toyota has a adjustable rod on the slave cyl. The po had it out of adjustment and my clutch would slip. I shorten the rod and it grabs alot better now and I haven't had it slip sense. Just my two cents. Mike
