79 and 80 ... are the only years for an adjustable clutch . NO "newer" years have this option .

Well, I split the engine and transmission, and it appears that the clutch was installed properly. The springs were facing the pressure plate, while the flatter side of the clutch disk faced the flywheel... the clutch fork was not binding, and there was no air in the clutch lines... The clutch pedal was very close to spec, so I'm not sure what the problem is... Slave cylinder seemed to be working right... So I'm stumped... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />

Did you check to make sure that your flywheel has the proper step offset.

There should be between 21 to 25 thousands step (I believe stock is 21 thou and most machine shops with take it to 25 thou for better clutch operation)

In other words the area where the clutch disc rides on the flywheel should be raised higher than the area where the pressure plate bolts to the flywheel edge.

This is a critical measurement because it is what determines the initial clamp force on the disc as well as the position of the pressure plate diaphragm fingers in relation to the throw out bearing.

if you don't have enough step, then the diaphragm finger will protrude more and the clamp force will be much reduced and may not hold properly.

Before you put it back together you need to verify that the clutch package they sent you is correct!

I will double check the flywheel step...
I do believe the clutch kit is correct, as everything seemed to be the same as the clutch that came off of the engine...

Thanks again for all the great tips!
