Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hey all, I'm trying to replace the u-joint on the rear drive shaft of my 82 CJ7, and after removing the g-clips I noticed that the bolts holding in the other 2 ends of the u-joint are... unusual (at least to me, who only started working on cars about 6 months ago).

I don't want to strip this, which I'm notorious for doing, and it's rusted too, which usually gives me the advantage in stripping it.

Is there a wrench specifically for that?

Them is TORX bolts.. Sweet ain't they? Where ever you got the U-joint will have a plastic bag with NEW clips and bolts.. GET ONE! Put new clips and bolts on there.. Don't use rusted worn crap on your ride.

You know, they did look an awful lot like Torx, but I only have the inverse of those. Hehe... the U-joint that I got has the clips, but I don't think it came with the bolts. I'll look around online and get some clean ones to put in their place.

Thanks Jim!

They look like 12 point bolts to me. A 8mm or 5/16 12 regular point socket should fit them just fine. BJ you better get some new glasses!

They are 12 pt 5/16", Ford and AMC used them. Use the box end of any combination wrench. Make darn sure the fit is tight.

Well, they do appear to be 12-points, but they're not 5/16ths... 7mm fits pretty snug, but I only have a 6-point, and that slips, so I'll buy a 12-point tomorrow and see if that works. Otherwise I may end up cutting it off. The replacement part is on its way anyways.

Try 1/4" 12pt. CJ's did not use metric sizes. 1/4" = 6.3mm explaining why the 7mm was close.

That makes some serious sense. Good thing the store I hit today didn't have any metric 12-points.
I'll give that a shot tomorrow.

The reason I said 5/16 or 8mm was because all the Jeeps I've worked on lately had 5/16 bolt heads on the u-joint straps and there is virtually no difference between the two sizes. Those do look smaller (now that I have my magnafiers on!). I have found one or two metric nuts on my CJ in other places (power steering pump area) but I can't prove they came on the stock Jeep.
