What if you're in a bind and can't get out to lock the hubs in manually. Can you still run in 4H or 4L and still have 4x4? Does it stay in 4x2? Will it hurt anything? Just curious...

stays in 4X2 just the same as 2wd is without manual locking hubs. Not really hurting anything you are just engaging the front driveshaft, diff and half shafts but if your hubs are unlocked so the power doesnt hook up to your front wheels. And no this is not bad for your truck you just may hear a few more things spining while you are driving.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
AHHH, 2wd Low Range. Its a beautiful thing you get w/manual hubs. Perfect for pullin' the boat out of the water, backin' that trailer around in the yard, etc.

My F350 PSD has manual/auto hubs. The auto part uses vacuum to spin the hubs (or if that don't work you can still spin'em by hand). I disable the auto function all the time for moving trailers in tight quarters. Its nice to take yer foot all the way off the clutch and not be going to fast!!

1984 4Runner - V6 rear axle (locked by Lincoln), header, plenty of body cancer!
Waiting for install: x-over steering, dual 'cases, twin-stick, 3" body & drivetrain lift, rear springs up front
Still need: rear springs, 35" MT's, bumpers/sliders
2001 F350 - 7.3 110k miles on WVO conversion now!

yes it is, pulling a 2800lb boat up the ramp in a 5 speed 12 year old 4runner is not my idea of a good time for the clutch, low range 2wd is tons of fun, i usually end up in 4th or 5th gear by the top of the boat ramp, haha.

I was simply amazed when I tried 4L for the first time. WOW! Crazy low gears! I started off in 3rd just like it was 1st.
