Yes, that is my part number per Don Herring Mitsubishi here in Plano, TX. They have my vin# in their system as I have my Montero Sport serviced there and they looked up the part numbers.

I wonder if there is a difference in the earlier generation Montero Sport and the late model montero sport?

Yep, I now. Ed had put the 2.85 gears in his 97 Montero sport 5spd. Do all three part numbers match for a 98 Montero Sport 3.0 Auto?

GEAR,T/F LOW SPEED
GEAR,T/F COUNTERSHAFT
This part nubmer is differant(MR110871) from CerOf's. Is this part number for 97-99 Montero Sports or all Montero Sports. If its all Montero Sports Where is CerOf getting his part number from? Because they don't match.

CerOf , is this your part number for the 01 Motero Sport? MR453346 : GEAR,T/F INPUT

Looking at the WINCAPS program, it shows that a 3.0/Auto equipped Sport uses the same input gear as a 3.5L Montero (MR110871). This tells me that the 3.15 gears would work in the auto equipped Sport. I know the 5spd Sports use the smaller Tcase, though.

Does anyone know what kind of gears come stock in a 97 Montero SR T Case? Just want to know how much of a difference 3.15's are from the stock gears. I am assuming that these 3.15 gears would work in my 97 Montero SR with auto tranny??? Is this the lowest gear ratio available for my 97 Montero T case?

What about diff gears? I have heard that I can get gen III diff gears from a dealer and have them put right in my gen II diffs and it will lower the ratio? is this a good idea? does it work well? by how much does it lower your diff gear ratios?

Scottie

The larger T-case (94+ SR's, 95+ LS, Sports w/ Auto's) has a 1.90:1 low range and the smaller T-case (almost everything else except Gen III) has a 1.925:1 ratio. The 3.15's will lower your T-case gearing by about 40%.

As far as diff gears, do you know if you have 4.636 gears or 4.272 gears? There was a change somewhere around then to the higher gears. Either way, if you look in the part number repository (stickied at the top of the Tech forum) you can find part numbers for 4.900 gears from a Montero Sport. These are as low as you can go in the SR. Going from 4.272 to 4.90 will lower your gearing by about 15%. Changing both the diff gears and the Tcase gears will really make it crawl slow. Your overall crawl ratio will change from 22:1 to 43:1.

How would I be able to tell if my 97 SR has 4.636 gears or 4.272 gears in the diffs? I thought 97's had the 4.636 gears and 98's & 99's had the 4.272 gears, but I don't know for sure.

4.272 Started in 97 along with 24V SOHC.
Pretty sure that's what you have. But just look at your VIN plate under hood: line 4, last 4 digits - axle gear ratio

Yeah, looks like I have 4.272 gears. So not only will I be changing out T case gears, but I will have to do diffs too.

Thanks!

Question for all of you out there with gearing expertise:

I have the 4.272 gears in my diffs. If I just change out the T case gears to 3.15's, would that lower my ratio enough to wheel with 35 inch tires without changine my diff gears from 4.272?? Or should I upgrade my diff gears to 4.90's as well if I want to wheel with 35's on the rims??

With 35"s you'd want 4.9 on the road not so much as off. Certainly 3.15 will be more then sufficient for 4wheeling, but every bit helps.

OK, well looks like I will do both, but T case will be before diffs. I have to put in a front locker anyway, so the front is easy to put new gears in, the rear on the other hand is already locked, but still needs to be opened up to put in the new gears even though it already has locker. But you are right, I would want all I could get.
