i have a 2001 u.s. spec montero sport es 3.0l rear disc with 4.636 gears(i counted teeth). can anyone tell me if the 5.29 ring and pinion will work for me, as i believe there is no answer yet whether or not the t-case gears will? i'd really like to get both.

The 5.29 gears will not fit. You have the large rear diff, so the lowest gearing available will be 4.90s. On the Tcase gears, do you have an auto or a manual? Or in 2001, did they have AWD? Some of us can look in WINCAPS and compare gear part numbers to see which ones might fit.
I'll be away on business for the rest of the week but PM me your VIN and I'll compare numbers.

Looked in WINCAPS and your T-case uses the same input gear, countershaft gears, and output gear as a 3.5L V6 equipped Gen II SR. So, this means you can use the 3.15 gears for an auto tranny. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Per a post I saw somewhere:

"Axle Data
Gen 1
2.6, 2.3TD, 2.5TD & 2.5TDI (some) :
front axle = 25 spline, 29mm diameter, diff = 7.25" diameter (low pinion)
rear axle = 28 spline, 30.5mm diameter, diff = 8" diameter
3.0V6 :
front axle = 28 spline, 29mm diameter, diff = 8" diameter (low pinion)
rear axle = 28 spline, 30.5mm diameter, diff = 9" diameter

Gen 2

3.0V6 :
same as Gen 1 except for NH & NJ auto has 7.25" diameter front diff (high pinion) NH & NJ 5sp man has 8" diameter front diff (high pinion)
2.5TDI :
same as NH & NJ auto
3.5V6 & 2.8TDI :-
front axle = 28 spline, 29mm diameter, diff = 8" diameter (high pinion)
rear axle = 31 spline, 33.5mm diameter, diff = 9.5" diameter"

Do high and low pinion refer to taller or shorter pinion gears on the ring gear assembly or the input pinion? Are these what affect whether the 2.85 or 3.15 gears can be used?

No, High pinion is that the propshaft is above the axle centerline, Low pinion is below axle centerline. No affect as far as transfer case goes.

Okay thanks. I was thinking about the 5.285 ring gears... My brain was on a tangent... and then I mixed the t-case thread and the diff thread in my mind... surprise surprise...

So, the 2.85 T-case gears would be the only one's to fit my 91 3.0 5-speed?

Thanks for answering my questions.
