I have done some research and just don't quite understand how the whole backspacing thing works. I recently was approached with a really good deal on some Mickey Thompson Classic wheels that have the 6 x 5.5 bolt pattern but it has 3 5/16 backspacing, now my question is, would that make the tires stick out too far on a first generation Amigo.

should be cool. the first gen amigos didn't have nearly as much backspacing as other isuzu's. but don't plan on too big of a tire.

I believe the average back spacing is 3 to almost 4 , depending on the type of truck , so those rims you were looking at should be ok.

How wide are the wheels? That will make a difference. 3 5/16" on a 8" rim will be much difference in overall vehicle width than a 10 or 12 inch rim.

Then, the center of the wheel will be almost centered in the rim. The shell will be pushed out 11/16 of an inch.

They should be close to stock and they should work for you. But, I would measure one of your current wheels for BS and rim width and see how they compare. I don't want to tell they will be OK without you checking to make sure.

This begs the question....
Are there any stores out there that will guarantee wheel fitment? I am in the market to get some wheels, and it is my worst nightmare that I have to special order some 5 on 6.5 x.x" backspaced rims, they don't work out for me, and I am stuck with 4 shiny new $200 bar stool bases . Do most places reorder and remount until something fits? Because it is my experience that these 2nd gen Rodeos have some pretty unforgiving dimensions and if I deviate only slightly from stock I am going to have clearance issues. Am I overthinking this???

I have those same wheels on the same vehicle you're asking about. They stick out about 1.25" more on each side versus the OEM snowflakes. IMHO, its just right... gives a little extra stance for stability but not ridiculous to where 1/2 the tread is outside of the fenders. Here are some pics:

BTW, as a word of advice, the center caps on these wheels rust like no other. I have had mine for just over a year and two of the center caps were about 50% rust (the weather around here probably has a lot to do with that). This Saturday, I pulled all 4 wheels, cleaned the center caps up as much as I could and hit them with a few heavy coats of clear wheel paint. I'd recommend doing that before you install them.

I highly doubt it because of the labor involved in mounting etc. Can you get involved with a club that someone will let you borrow their wheels to check how they fit then adjust from there. Many GM and toyota use this pattern.

I used graph paper when figuring out what wheels to pick last time I did to measure how much more the tires will stick out due to change in wheel and tire width.
