The waggy axle will be too narrow, it is >2" narrower than the rear. The best bet would be a FJ80 axle or a Fullwidth d44 (preferebly narrowed to ~64-65"). A 2gen 12bolt should bolt in, I am not sure on the abs sensors, though. My 99 had two, one on each end. My 96 has one mounted on the ring gear.

Not being able to do the work yourself will be a major factor in driving up the cost.

Not too narrow. Waggy axles are 61.5" wms to wms. a late model 12-bolt is 63" wms to wms. difference of 1.5" divide by two sides thats only .75" difference at either side. hardly noticable and you could easily cover that difference with wheel spacers or different wheel offset if it really bothers you that much.

My waggy measured out at 60.5" stock, and 62" with f150 hubs to convert it to 5lug. At 60.5" it was noticably narrower than the rear. The steering was crap with 2.5" BS 8" wheels, so I would guess it to be the same when using spacers.

I am wide now with a 69.5" axle and 14.5" tires on 10" wheels with 4" BS. I would think a 63-65" front axle would be perfect on the trooper.

very good advice, I would take it a step further and buy a trail rig already built, or abandoned half-done project , maybe somone who needs money... After reading this post again If I were not building a truck but wanted to wheel I'd sell what I had and buy a used project truck already built. You can find often times a guy will drop 8-10K on a project 4runner or similiar, Sas and alll the fixins and then want to buy a house, move out of the area, lose interest etc, and sell the rig for $4k. I would think long and hard at that option seriously.

If you are still set on building, might want to send matt at indy4x an email i know he builds rigs for customers besides the products he sells.

Thanks to all, especially some of the detailed replies. I now have realized that I just don't want to spend that kind of money for this conversion. I will continue to make some practical upgrades with my current set up and enjoy it for what it can do. I just have too many other uses/needs for that kind of outlay.
