22RE alternator install - remove lower radiator hose? #702726 03/05/06 01:03 AM

Tried searching and got 40,000 alternator questions. So here is 40,001:

Is there a way to get the alternator out without removing the lower radiator hose? If not, any trick to removing the hose w/o doing a drain or keep the mess minimal? If I have to drain - how much fluid are we talking about?

I have power steering, so no room to go out the top.

You can probably do it w/o removing the hose, but it is so much easier with the ose off. 2 gallons of coolant, use a bucket and you can refill when done. I did this swap on the side of the road once, 5 minutes to drain the rad and the same to refill.

I've got pretty much the same setup cept for a year newer and a carb.....but I pushed pulled and yanked on it for about 30 mins and I managed to squeeze it out the top.....I didn't want to drain my radiator

I've got an '86 22R but the configuration should be the same. It can be done without taking off the hose. You just have to keep turning it until you get it out topside.

I have a 91 pickup with a 22RE I changed my alternator yesterday the powersteering hose is in the way to take it out the top. Remove the lower hose it much quicker.

At first glance you wouldn't think that it can come out the top but it can.

Just 2 gallons aye? I'll pop it off then and refill with fresh. I was thinking a lot more and a big mess resulting.

Thanks!
