I know when I changed plugs on my 3.4 at 60K, I found that the dealer *forgot* to change them at 30K (don't use that dealer anymore). hupptoy
Same thing happened to me! I had the 60k service done in case I sold the truck I'd have a record. At 95k it started missing badly which scared the bejeezes out of me. I decided to do the service myself and I found that the non-platinum plugs lookedg great but the platinums looked like hell because they had a 100k miles on them! Just goes to show you that if you want something done right you have to do it yourself. BTW, is that 3 plugs platinum, 3 plugs non-platinum just a cost savings measure? Seems silly.

BTW, is that 3 plugs platinum, 3 plugs non-platinum just a cost savings measure? Seems silly. I have heard of different brands on each bank of the 3.4 (mine had Denso on one side and NGK on the other), but they were all non-Platinum. I have never heard of Toyota using Platinum on one bank and non-Platinum on the other though. What year and motor was this? hupptoy

Well I tried the .031 gap. WRONG. I tried the .044 gap. RIGHT
The manual for the 04 2.4L is INcorrect. .044 is correct.
Yes NGK and Denso, spec. the gap at .044.

I didn't know either but if you look at the maintenance schedule it says to change non-plat every 30k and all plugs at 60k. That is also echoed in the maint section on this site. http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/tacoma_4runner_30k/maintenancep3.html#plugsThe only thing I can figure is that the plugs under the coil packs get a slightly better spark so perhaps they figure they could get away with non-plat on that bank? Are you sure that you had 3 platinum and 3 non-platinum? Or did you just have the different brands (NGK/Denso)? The maintence schedule is a generic version for all Toyotas of that year, that is why they list both Platinum and non-Platinum plug change schedules. And the link only seems to mention the non-platinum that the trucks use. I think a lot of their cars had the platinum and their trucks had the non-platinum. hupptoy

For those without manuals, you should also be able to find this info on a sticker under the hood.

The Manual does say .031. The correct gap is .044.
I know, I have tried .031. This was on #90919-01164 aslo listed as K16R-U11. These are the O.E.M.plugs that are in the truck, when you purchase it. I just installed yesterday, NGK BKR5EIX-11. These are Iridium center electrode, with a taper cut ground electrode.
I saw NO reason to change plugs every 30K miles. If, you have done this on a 2.4L, you know it is not a piece of cake. The air intake passes over the two center plugs. It has to be taken apart to get to them.

I don't blame you. As long as it's runs fine and the MPG is normal, why bother. I bought my 96 used with ~120k miles on it. I changed the plugs a couple of months later and found that they were the originals. The center electrodes were worn to a V because of the twin side electrodes. Yet my MPG didn't budge a bit afterwards. I guess I won't bother replacing them ever again <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
