Getting the Wheeling Fever
Changed out the shot and very noisy tranny in my wifes 84 4x4 with a rebuilt Marlin unit and found that the ring and pinion in back is shot too.

It looks like the 79-85 55"wide rearend will fit in the 1984 but I noticed that all of the 3rd members from 79-94 use an 8" R&P with 30 spline axles.

Will all Toyota 8" 3rd members fit in an 1984 rearend?

Am I correct in thinking that the 79-85 rearend will bolt into the 1984?

Thanks for your help.

3rd members yes. I have a 1994 pickup and a 1995 4Runner rear thirds in eash axle of my 85. Entire rear axle assembly's however is different. Some mods will need to be done depending on the years. But, just 3rds, your OK. PS you can swap 4cyl for 6cyl too! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Thank you for the info.

Is there any difference between the 8" rear 3rd member and the 8" front 3rd member or can they be interchanged?

Thanks again for the help.

I found a complete (w/locking hubs) front and rear with aftermarket springs from an 85 for $350.

Sounds like it will work.
