it sounds like your passengers are pulling the belt out too far. Some people, especially overweight people, tend to pull the belt all the way out before buckling it. Problem is when you pull all the way out it engages the ratcheting mechanism. This is NOT a flaw or problem its supposed to work that way for use with child seats. Simply tell your friends to stop pullin the belt so far out, and slide the seat back more.
