Hey Guys____ I have an 85 runner with a 22re, 5 sp. that had the engineööö professional rebuiltööö. In the morning when I start the truck, there is a ôloud tickingö from the engine compartment ,like the engine needs oil, than after about 5 û8 seconds it goes away. Then in the course of the day if left for periods of say longer than 2 or three hours IÆll hear the sound BUT not as long or pronounced. It just doesnÆt sound normal to me. Could it be the timing chain, and if it is WHY it is so loud, other Toyotas IÆve had NEVER sounded like that. BEFORE I go back and talk to the shop I wanted some feedback from you guys, so I'm not COMPLETELY in the dark, when talking to the shop. Thanks in advance _______ BAYRUNNER

Hi Bayrunner...let me first start off by saying I have NEVER been inside a Toy. 4cyl.

OK, now my e-advice It sounds like you've got 'valve tap' by the description you gave. This usually is pronounced when the engine is cold/er and almost all of the oil is in the pan, not the head.

After starting the engine up, you hear a tapping that gets quieter and quieter before going away, no?

[off-topic]This is actually very common on older engines as well as certain engines- for example my brother's 2000 Nissan Xterra has done this since he bought it. It gets progressively worse until I finally change his oil when it's 5k miles overdue
Isuzu 3.2/3.5 engines fall under the same category as well and the most likely causes for all of the aforementioned engines is sluddge build-up in the oil passages. This can be remedied (or help at the very least) by runing a 0W oil through the engine for about 30 minutes and draining/refilling with "regular" oil.[/offtopic]

BUT

As to why this would be occuring on a newly rebuilt engine, I can't say exactly. There's a few thoughts that come to mind, but I really don't feel comfortable throwing out ideas that could be way off base.
The only advice I feel comfortable giving is to check your valve clearances or have the shop do it for you if it was rebuilt very recently. And if/when you go back to the shop, don't accept 'that's normal' for an answer because you know you've never experienced this before.

Since I'm practically illiterate when it comes to 22R's, RE's, etc etc. hopefully someone that is more familiar with this engine will chime in.

Good Luck!

Roll Me Over
*****
>>>*I would suspect the timing chain tensioner has a bit more slack than normal (A surfaced head/block can cause this).. Then it takes a few seconds for the engine to build up oil pressure to take up the slack.

Oil filter might be bleeding down too, try a factory Toyota filter and see it it quits....*EB

*Beats the he** outa me!....*LOL**...

my 89 yota p/u 5spd 22-re does that occasionally as well, I found out it was because I leave it in first gear instead of using the E-break. I guess the truck rolled forward enough to give too much slack on something and it made this loud ticking noise when I started it. Almost sounded like a diesel but the sound went away in 5sec or less and trucks got plenty of oil/fluids

My GMC V8 did the same thing. I have read that the oil takes time to get to the valves, etc. Some people believe it is the oil filter letting oil drain when it shouldnt. Try a nicer oil filter, maybe you rebuilder used a cheap one?
who knows, it never stopped in my GMC but never caused any problems

Mine does it too. I'll try a toyota filter when I change the oil this week. What weight is recommended, 10-30? I just got the truck

What is a usual price to pay for a valve adjustment?

A GM V8 is a pushrod engine. It has lifters that can stick or not fill with oil fast enough on startup and tick for a while. My V6 ticks and has since new, its the injectors on mine.
