So swapped out the two front parking lights and rebuilt the headlamp washer the other night (boy does that thing spray, no wonder the impeller would ususaly shatter, good thing mine was just a rusty armature) and since I had the 10mm driver in hand I decided to take off the hose from the air box to the turbo to check it...
Turbine spins freely and the slop I would describe like (sorry if it is a poor analogy) what a M4 bolt would move side to side & up down if it had 6 to 10 threads engauged.. Good? Bad??
Also I am thinking of moving the altimiter and putting a boost gauge in its place. I have to drill and tap the elbow from the turbo to the manifold. Is it better to put this fitting on the side?, Top?, Bottom? Any suggestions?
Thanx

M-4 as in weapon or fastener? Either way it should have minimal play. Here is what I did with my gauges, stock gauges are crap. ![[Linked Image]](http://pics.montypics.com/okred/2004-04-05/1081174358_dsc01421.jpg) That is boost and oil psi.

What's that little vent between your guages? What does that do? Mine's covered by the guage pod.

shaft play is never good in a turbo charger.

If you allow .002 clearance per bearing surface and there are two surfaces per bearing, that says you can move each bearing .004". Since the bearings are well inboard of the shaft you will see double the movment at the end of the shaft.
Two bearings.. get even more movment.
Bottom line? .022" of movement at the end of the shaft is pretty normal. As long as the wheels have not rubbed the housing your probably OK.

Kevin's .022" sounds right to me. I've successfully used up to 1mm, and .022"=.55mm
Do you have a waste gate? If so, for the boost gauge, tap the waste gate line from the turbo outlet with a tee for the gauge, or for that matter, any manifold tap upstream of the throttle - woops, diesel and no throttle - any tap, including the brake booster line before the check valve. I would avoid any metal drilling unless you are SURE you can get ALL the chips out.

Clay It's actually just a little access cover for a dashbolt. Plug is behind there for stock guage pod.
