Getting the Wheeling Fever
...ONE LONG POST...(help me out here!)
Ok im gonna go into town in the next couple of days or buy stuff online (probly both) im Focusing on engine stuff since this monty hasnt run in four years . Whatever you think is best for me to get this Monty Up and Running Post em here! (price dont matter just post em' up!)

1.Headers-people say that stock headers are usually cracked after awile i checked them the looked fine but im gonna get some new ones at some time since there not essential right now. When I do What should i get? ill probly get them online so if u know any site with monty header post em!

2.Carb-My carb is a even rebuilt what im want a new one what do you suggest? Probly get this too online...

3.???-When driving 2days ago all was fine with the rebuilt carb until after hitting third gear for the 4th time the engine started Hesititating and whenever i tried to accelerate the vehicle would slow down like if i was braking? im figuring this is another carb problem i hope it aint anything else .

4.Fuelpump??-When i start the monty it takes a LOTTA time to start, it will turn over and over and over but thats it i gotta pump it, leave it for awile, then return, at times i had to throw gas in the carb to get it started! im thinkin this is probly the fuel pump, i checked the fuel filter too and blew it out with my compressor, then again it could be the carb (thats why i get a new one), but i dont know im not the pro.

5. Battery-The battery dies really quick i dont know why just trying to turn over the engine( since it takes so long to start)it dies if i let it. If you know anything about this post it, other then that it might be the battery itself, its a real scrawny $20 one about 3/4 the size of a regular one? ill probly get a new one 2morrow.

6.Crankshaft,bearings?-when i am blessed and the mitsu starts after about 2minutes theres a irritating, screeching noise the gets louder and louder and stops if i accelerate but soon returns, after about 10minutes the noise fades away and doesnt return. From the Haynes Manual, it says the its a bearing on the crankshaft i think ill have to look it up. any ideas on that?

7.you!- if you have anything else you think i should buy thats important or you think will help the "lunchbox" post it. I live in the smallest of towns so nobody here has ever seen a 1988 montero (feel kinda proud owning one)and I hope you can help me with the problems stated above. If you have any upgrades that benefited your montero/raider post them here too itll only help me to get this car back on its feet. Other then that im gonna get hella500's, paint the grille and headlight holders chrome and some 31 BFG's with some rims that i think i can get some discounted from my brother. all above i can do myself so i dont have to go outta town to get things done or have my chevy x-mechanics work on it lol. anyway Post your best UPgrade too, what you think helped your car the most

P.S i saw a 88 raider/montero A/C compressor on ebay that was used from a junkyard for 50 bucks, he says it works and can be returned for any reason. I just cant see a compressor for $50 when auto stores sell rebuit ones for 300 and up.should i go for it?

I picked a couple:
Battery: Optima Red Top (~120)
Carb: Weber or remanned Mikuni
Squealing: Try changing he water pump/alernator belt first(cheap)
As you said, you have a remanned carb already. The fuel pump may be the culprit of your hesitation and starting problems. My truck had mahor hesitation/starting problems when I had a head/gasket problem (lets hope it's not that!)
Header: Some say Thorley and some say Pacesetter. I don't have one, so I can't say for sure...

Body Damage is Cool
The 2.6 4 cyl was not the most reliable engine. Prone to cracked heads and spun bearings. For most Mitsu engine swaps, you neet to also swap the tranny and Tcase. That gets expensive. I did what the Aussies do and swapped in a Chevy 4.3 drive train.
Previously I had gone the Thorsen header, Weber Carb and high lift cam. It ran great but failed emissions.

For the upgrade of offroad lights, there are some considerations.
1. How often do you anticipate using lights other than your headlights? You may consider upgrading to Hella, Cibie', or similar replacement headlights before going full bore on offroad lamps. I'm running the Cibie' Z-beam with 60W low and 100W high. This setup is pretty good, most of the time.

2. For every so many Watts, you'll need to supply so many Amps and I think the alternator is rated at 45 amps. Remember the alternator and battery will have greater loads with more lighting. I have an Optima and will be working in some other alternator when I hook up my accessory lighting.

3. Air resistance: depending on where you mount the lights, you can negatively affectv your mileage. As in the photo responses to your other post, you'll see that Les and I mounted the lights on the front bumper. Others like 89Monty, have their lamps mounted on a roof rack. I'm jealous of the rack !

4. Money: sounds like you'll need to get the truck mechanically reliable before you spend $$ on accessories. Me too!

Autozone batteries a very good quality and have the lowest failure rate for any similar battery ( Diehard for example). $55 or so gets you a good one.

Check to see if your choke is closed when you start the motor. ALso look down the primary throttle bore and move the throttle to see if your accelerator pump is working.

The squeel sounds like a fan belt.

As far as the engine goes they have two issues but are generally reliable.

One is the ballance shaft chain can fail if not properly adjusted. If It's its loose and slapping a pivot bolt can break. The chain drives the oil pump, No oil pressure = no motor.

Any aluminum head motor eventuially loses its head gasket, this one is no differant. The hotter they get the sooner it happens. Most last till 170,000 + if you dont overheat them.

The head can crack if you over heat and may crack even if you dont. This is common on aluminum head engines. The upside is they last well enough that if you do yours over by the time it fails again the truck will have been crushed.

The bottom end of these motors is very srtong and not prone to bearing failures (forged steel cranks, beefy rods, very strong block). All motors fail if they dont have oil!

since its been sitting for so long, id go with gaskets & seals. when a rig sits for an extended period of time they tend to dry out and spring leaks. also, anything you would need for a full tune up.
btw, best mod... a new body that wasnt all squished.

I see no point in fooling with cams and headers.

One word. Turbo.
