Autohubs are probably fine for most daily driving conditions but if you take it offroad onto unfriendly terrain, then I wouldn't rely on the auto hubs too much.

Ditto. Auto-hubs are okay for very light-duty 4WD but anything more than that and there will be benefits seen with manual hubs. Besides, I'd rather get out and lock my hubs while on solid ground than have my hubs unlocking on me while in the snow or mud. Not that big of a deal. They're fairly cheap and very easy to install yourself. Once they're locked they stay locked and when you unlock them they unlock. Not much of a gray-area there like some of the problems that auto-hubs present (sometimes auto-hubs unlock when they should be locked and sometimes they stay locked when they shouldn't be).

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I'll agree with the hubs not liking ice and snow. I live in SW Alaska where the snow/ice/cold will make these auto hubs hard to work with I think. Now my hubs lock and I can hardly get them to unlock. Maybe it would help to remove and clean these autos, but I have a set of Superwinch hubs on the way. As far as getting out and locking hubs, I have the wife dialed in on that.
