Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
Just bought a 1990 montero with auto free_wheel hubs . 4 wheel drive working fine until today. 1 ft new snow. Started out in 4 lo making a path and packing down snow. Back and forth and making progress until the 4 wheel drive stopped working. What engages the hubs? I've read from the posts forward motion or vacuum engages the four wheel drive. Did I disengage the hubs by doing all the back and forth motion? Trying to figure out where to start looking for the problem. Thanks

Auto hubs disengage when you back up. No vacuum involved. If you find that you do a lot of back and forth wheeling you need to upgrade to manual hubs.

From what I have read from (the translated) users manual is to keep the reverse runs less than 2 meters (6 feet) although even then it may pop out..

Those hubs often "freeze-up" in the snow ... get your truck to a warm place and let it sit.
I replaced my hubs once, ... the "auto-hubs" were half the price of the "manual-hubs" for my Suburban.
There was another post up here recently, ... which discussed which hub was the best to use.

I don't know why you'd want to have to get out to lock the hubs, ... the auto-hubs are tough enough to go the distance, ... they just don't like snow and ice.
Go auto, ... there are enough.

Did they only act up in the snow, ... did the heat help?
