Mileage report:
So far I'm averaging about 2 mpg better with the new tires. I was averaging between 20-21mpg before and now am averaging between 22-23mpg. Both of these numbers are corrected for the difference in tire size from stock. The gain in mpg is mostly due to the slight reduction in size of the tire. However, my mud tires were so worn (nearly bald on the back) that they were actually a bit smaller than my new tires. So I think my old average was probably a bit worse (maybe 1-2mpg) than I had calculated because I was basing it on the original size of the tires-- not the well-worn size. So really, I have gained a good bit. I'm wondering if there is a large difference in rolling resistance based on the tread design between a mud tire and an all terrain tire, or if my gain is just mainly due to the reduction in section width (and thus the amount of tire in contact with the road)?
