ok just wanted to say hello and thx for all the help so far, ive been reading alot. here is the scenario this pickup had 22rte then the motor blew, the guy bought a 1993 toyota 22re long blk w/90k on it, installed it with the turbo manifolds and ecu. he said it ran fine but when he had the fuel pump changed ran ok for a week now it wont run very good. one of two things is going on guy is lying never ran right because of turbo parts on it. or he is telling the truth which i doubt. which brings us to the present time and i am the proud owner of this gorgeous truck in amazing shape(omg this is the one)type stuff here...
i scooped it for 1300 after he listed it for 1000 but i was first and promised it to me then tell he got like 5million calls and figures he priced it too low tells me he is going to relist for 1500, long story short i locked it down for 1300. i was talking to a couple of guys today and they told me that i will need a new ecu, injectors, and maybe some sensor forget name. does this sound right? any yota gurus on here that can help a little? i know its a swap but u guys must be the swap kings if anyone. what do i need to buy if anything??????? what will match what wont do i need the ecu and all the fuel injection as well???
any help here would be greatly appreciated!!!!

It depends on what the previous owner used off the factory turbo engine and what he used off of the 93 engine. The pistons, head, injectors, ECU, radiator, Air Flow Meter, and exhaust manifold are all specific to the turbo motor. But the previous owner should have reused all of those parts. I am curious as to how he plumbed the oil return line, since the normal 22REs don't have this provision in the block. The naturally aspirated motor will have higher compression, but that is not necessarily a problem if you keep the boost low because the factory compression on the turbo motors was REALLY low. What is puzzling is that it ran good for a week but now there are problems. Can you describe the issues you are having? Stutter at idle? Smoke? Won't rev? Jeff Moskovitz is the resident turbo guru, he highlighted some of the issues with this motor recently in this thread . How many miles are on your truck? It is possible that the original issue the previous owner was having was related to the turbo and not the actual engine and he replaced the wrong part. That would explain why there is still a problem but not why it ran good last week.

Hi, welcome to the board! Where ya from; you can edit your profile if you wish, via your 'my home'. First, forget what your friends have to say for the moment; do some old fashioned preventative maintenance FIRST. Change ALL your lubes; remember to remove the FILL plug FIRST, or you'll be sayin bad words. Get a 6 pt 22mm and 24mm socket for yourself. Inspect/lube u-joints; don't overlook the 'hidden' zerk on the front D/L. Inspect brakes and ebrake cable Change fuel filter and air filter plugs/wires/cap/rotor-- replace. Inspect/replace belts and hoses as needed. Inspect suspension and axles for leaks and cracked leaf springs (others will chime in I'm sure) Click on our Toyota section above, and you'll be transported to our tech articles to further acquaint yourself with your truck. Sounds like you have some doubt in the seller; all the more reason to go thru the truck. We also have a couple of factory service manuals already sticky'd here, so have a nut. Also bookmark these sites: www.engnbldr.comwww.4Crawler.comwww.yotatech.comwww.autoshop101.comwww.1sttoyotaparts.comwww.rceng.com if you REALLY decide you MUST do something with your injectors. On the L/B swap, did that include or exclude harnesses from the donor vehicle? Please better define "won't run very good"--what's it doing? Could be as simple as the TPS being out of adjustment.

I have a 22rte in my engine, but Mosk is the real expert on them. Harry hit on my big question of how did the P/O plumb in the oil feed and return for the new engine. both go into the 22rte-only block. step one is to dig around that turbo and see how it's oiled. if there's no oil feed, the turbo is not gonna be a happy camper
the second thing to check is a compression test. 22re's are known to eat headgaskets if severely neglected, and you have no idea the history of that 90k mile used motor in your truck.
I'd start with these two issues and we can work from there.

sorry i didnt make it clear. there is no turbo on the truck now! my understanding is that he bought a longblock out of a 1994 2wd pickup. and used everything from the old setup but the turbo, turbo efi prolly the injectors, stock ecu, wiring harness but i will talk with him tonight and get the scoop. thx sooo much... i love fixing and tinkering/restoring collectable cars, but hate beating my head against a brick wall to do so!!!!!

Take notes; and if he has extra parts laying around, grab 'em. You can always resell 'em here once you get things sorted out.

You should just pull the 22RE back out and go get a rebuilt turbo engine and put it in. If all the turbo EFI system is still there, the 22RE is not going to run right with it. That's a good price so you should be able to get the right motor and put it back in. Is there any turbo at all with the truck? Getting a rebuilt CT20 turbo will be expensive and if you don't have a core that will add to the cost. Get the turbo if he still has it. I ported out the exhaust manifold and turbo housing on my old 87 4Runner and that thing ran great with a new turbo on it! They're a fun engine, but they get pricey real quick.
