i am getting new tires for my 91 trooper with the v6. i am considering 31 x 10.5's but would like a wider 32 or 31 x 11.5's. i just need to know if i will burn through a tranny, or my motor too quickly with the 11.5's.

32X11.50's are fine and you don't need alift for them 33's and up is where your power goes bye bye

I would agree witht hat mostly, BUT I have just put 33x10.50s on my 88 Troop with the 2.6 and my power did NOT go down at all. The thing to look for is the width of the tire...that seems to really zap the power

I can't speak for your experience... but from a physics (or some kind of math <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" /> ) standpoint, height should be the bigger factor. Putting on taller tires has the same effect as putting in shallower differential gears... it lowers the RPMs and, as a result, your vehicle is putting out less power at the same speed. Width, tread type, etc will also have an effect in the form of rolling resistance. I know just going from the stock 31x10.50 to a 32x11.50 came with a noticable decrease in power and braking ability.

I have 33x10.50 BFG Mts on my 89RS Trooper. There was minimal loss of acceleration from 31s. I think overall weight of the wheel tire combo can make a bigger difference than height.

Body Damage is Cool
I hope you guys do not fool yourself. When I made a very modest tire size change, from stock 30" to 31", my relatively modern and powerful Rodeo did feel the difference. When I hear people switching to 33 with "minimal loss of acceleration", on older trucks, I wonder how it's possible.

It is all about the gears .... 89RS has 4.77. Trust me it run fine, cruiing 75 mph is no problem.

One thing I think really changes the power is the weight of the tire also. Here is what I found when looking for tires for my Trooper. This is for BFG MT's:

31x10.50 weighs 43lbs

33x10.50 weighs 48lbs

33x12.50 weighs 64lbs

Going from a 31 to 33x10.50 is only 5lbs per tire, but to a 33x12.50 is 21lbs per tire. So for 4 33x10.5 it is only 20lbs extra of tire and for a 33x12.5 would be 84lbs extra of tire. That is alot of rotating mass, almost like having a 6wheel 31x10.50 Trooper smile.

Also, think about this. If you have almost bald 31x10.5's and go with 33x12.5's, I bet that would be over 100lbs different. That would seem to make a big difference.

L8r,

Kevin
