My friends 94 pickup 22RE engine is only running on 3 cylinders because she stripped the spark plug or broke it off in the head. I was considering buying her truck for a couple hundred dollars and fixing the spark plug problems and reselling it, or maybe just helping her fix it and sell it. So my question is do have to pull the head to do a heli coil? Also Ive never done a heli coil which is a concern. Is it hard? should I take the truck to a machinist? The motor doesnt have many miles and its the original not rebuilt so I would like to leave the head alone if possible. The rest of the truck is pretty nice still.Any help is appreciated

depending on which hole is stripped ? If its #4 , then IMO , taking off the head is the best bet ....
I would almost recommend you take it to a pro any way ..there are so many ways to wreck things ...

I'd vote for pulling the head. To do a coil you have to drill out the hole. There is no way you will keep drill debris out of the cylinder....
If Mad Max had a 4runner...

I would say, given your lack of Irishness* in matters mechanical, don't take ANY shortcuts!

I did one in my wife's car about 10 years ago. It worked great. They make a "kit" to do it. It has the tap and coil to do it. No drilling required. You put grease on the tap to catch all the shavings. Tap the bad threads then clean real good. The kit comes with some lock-tite to hold the heli-coil in. Then in goes the plug. Make sure you use some anti-seize on the plug threads. This was on a chevy 2.8L. I say don't pull the head and give it a try. Got another 50k on it before I sold it....It was still running........
