States rights in the US constitution prevent the federal gov. from interveining (sending troops, releif, etc.) until they are "invited" by the governer or state ledgislature. Kinda puts a kink in our response affairs. I was in Orleans' just after it happened, working insurance situations for my company. I encountered a very ungrateful bunch of folk. ( I'm sure that there we're many there gratefull too!)

However, glad to hear that the Aussies learned from our mistakes.

No disrespect, but we had exactly the same response to Cyclone Tracy in Darwin, Northern Territory, 31 years ago(1975), as we have had to Cyclone Larry...It would appear that you could learn a bit from us.

We don't all have to "learn" from the Americans.

yeah, so did TX. instead of building levies and being worried about flooding the entire city again, or having the island wiped off the map, Galveston rebuilt Galveston island after the estimated category 5 hurricane hit in 1900 killing 12,000 people, 6,000 on Galveston island, 6,000 in surrounding areas. they pumped sand from ship channels and poured it onto the island with a 1:12 slope so that if hit with major flooding or tidal wave, the water would run off rather than sit. the island is also 18 feet higher than it used to be.

New Orleans is the exception to the rule. it's a welfare city with a 70% poverty population. the money that exists there is in the hands of the very, very few. the money made there often leaves with it's visitors. many of those that stayed were of the criminal sort, the sort too bullheaded to move and the sort that couldn't due to being immobile in some way, bed-ridden and what have you.

it wasn't meant that the world should learn from America's mistakes. the mistakes made here are the mistakes of one mayor and his governor. 2 people who i HOPE the world absolutely does not learn from. if they do, we are ALL in trouble. however, the event itself presents an excellent opportunity for those who may face similar catastrophes, to learn from it and be as prepared as possible or to know when to get out of mother nature's way. that instict for survival is supposed to tell us when to stand and fight and when to run for our lives. in this case, it should have been the latter, but apparently, there was another memo out there, and apparently, some more people didn't get it.

Wow, I was unaware that American had nothing to teach by her mistakes. If I we're walking across the lot in front of you and I tripped, would you step over what I tripped on. It's simple, we all learn from one another. God knows, I've learned everything KIA from you guys. Don't be so smug, we're ALLIES.
