Getting the Wheeling Fever
The long block came in today and I am confused on why they look different. I am sure that someone here can tell me. The first picture is my old engine and the second one is the new one. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Your new motor has a balance shaft elimination kit. It has no balance shaft, did you order it that way? It will still run fine but you might have slightly more vibration.

Do I need to cover the hole or is it fine open?

Open, the oil will drain down.

Do you mean the oil will drain down the outside if it's left open?

I've never had one of those motors apart, but it seems to me that the PCV system wouldn't work either.

Once the timing cover is on it will drain back into the pan. On the side of the block there is a cover for the balance shaft, that needs to be installed.

If you look into where the balance shaft used to be there looks like and should be a race press fit into the hole to block the oil passage for the balance shaft. If its left out you will not get proper oil pressure.

I can see the sleeve/plug in the hole for the upper ballance shaft.

Personally I never liked eliminting the ballance shafts. Some are OK with it. The upside is it is less parts to fail and it saves the rebuilder money.

The down side is the motor wont be as smooth and you may notice buzzing and vibration.

There is a sleeve in the hole, but it is not plugged. How much vibration are we talking and how much does this space affect the oil pressure?
