A friend of mine has a 2005 Tundra and wants to change the tranny fluid but doesn't know how to do it.
Here's my questions: How do you do it? What oil weight should he use? How much fluid will he need? Is there a filter that will need to be replaced at this time? Where do you fill/insert the oil in?
Thanks for your help.

tranny fluid change is difficult without pumping it out while cycling new back in...took it to the local oil change place and paid them, they cycled through 23 quarts or so until it came out nice and bright red. Here is a tutorial...may need a little bit of 2005 Tundra specific steps, personally its easier to pay to have it done afterall you dont save a whole lot of money after youve bought all your ATF... You can take down the pan and change the filter. It's pretty easy. The only thing I would recommend would be that you MUST use the correct Tranny Fluid. I think that his tranny may use an oil you can ONLY get from Toyota. Look it up in your Owners Manual to make sure. Or it might even say what it uses on his Tranny Fluid dip stick. Don't take it to some local shop to do it because they probably will use Dextron III. I'll post more on this tomorrow after I look this up on my All Data program at work.

his 05 tundra requires a different tranny fluid. nothing is wrong with dexron II or III if thats what your vehicle calls for.

Newer Toyotas use a Highly Friction Modified ATF. Toyota's OEM brandname is T-IV. Generic spec is JWS3309, Mobil makes one [3309] that is compatible. My Volvo AWD also uses the 3309 type HFM ATF [Aisin tranny.]
Mobil 1 syn ATF is NOT comaptible with the HFM T-IV, Mobil will tell you that straight up.
HFM and Dexron III fluids are mutually exclusive; I do not care what scAmsoil says about their 'universal' ATF.
T100s use good ol' Dexron III / Mobil 1 works great. God Bless Toyota for putting a drain plug in the T100 tranny pan. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

David,
Changing the oil in an automatic transmission is not a difficult job, though it's messy.
However, since you asked if there's a filter, and where you put the oil in, I suspect that you should leave this job alone.
If you are determined to go ahead and do it, buy a manual, read it, and follow the instructions. Better still, get someone who has done it or is well versed in the job to do it with you. That way you will learn and it will be done correctly. Otherwise you are quite likely to find yourself with a remarkable mess and an undrivable truck.

Guys, like I said in my original post, this is not my truck. It's a friend of a friend's. In fact, I haven't even seen it yet. I'm just trying to get him some information.
Thanks, David

I have an 05 Tundra Double cab and when i read his post i also laughed about not knowing where to put the oil in...i then went out today to look at my truck and let me tell you something...there is NO dipstick on the 05 Tundra double cab. I looked in the owners manual and it said nothing about the tranny or how to check it. I do know one thing though...the 05 Tundra requires Toyota Genuine ATF Type WS. And if you drain the pan it will require 3qts to fill it back up...where you put that in, who knows?
