Getting the Wheeling Fever
O.k. so the jeep just got a reman engine, because the old one had so much blow by my driveway is now a moat (still ran fine though)Anyway with a new motor time to take care of all the annoying noises. alls well until around 60 if I let off the gas noise goes away. Already replaced both u-joints in the rear drive shaft and am about to do the front. My thought was that it may be the crappy pepboys 31's(bought w/american racing rims in want ad $150)but they were on before noise..maybe there out of balance. Also I didnt want to balance them because next week 3.5"susp and 33's .I need to fix this problem before the lift as not to mask it further any help would be appreciated

If there is a lift on it now, you might want to check the wedges that are under the rear axle. Sometimes the bolts can work loose and the wedge becomes a little loose and noise will take place. Hope this can help.

Can you be a little more specific in describing the noise? Bad u-joints can make from None to chirping, squeaking, grinding, thumping etc. I usually feel a bad u-joint before hearing it. Is there any vibration associated with the noise? Can you say if it's coming from the front? The Rear? the middle? The more info you can give the better the chance we have of guessing the cause. It would be nice to know the specifics of the Jeep without having to search old posts. Like Year, model, engine, tranny, etc. I guess it's the 87 YJ in your profile?

tranny mounts? wheel bearing? i'm kinda shooting in the dark. if your rear springs are soft it is possible that you could have torqued a u-joint again. last time i did mine it was a dry joint which was frozen so it wasn't real clear that was the problem till i pulled it. because it was frozen solid it was effectually shaking the tranny on every revolution. probably not the front joints as your disconect will leave that stationary. tires out of balance could vibrate you too, or runout in your rims. you should put your jeeps stats in your signature line. had to dig around to see that you drive an 87 wrangler. i'm assuming stock? good luck with it.

Sorry its a 87 yj w/ Howell fi an Hei dist auto tranny (wife cant drive stick) its got a 13/4" shackle lift american racing rims with 31" tires ,another thing I was thinking about was I have the elec. fuel pump bracketed to the underside of the tranny skid plate I wonder if that is vibrating ,gonna put some pipe insulation around it to test that theory, the noise seems to be coming from the center of the jeep its hard to tell cause it only happens on the hiway all thoughts are appreciated old stories or this freak thing happened to me because its now the 2nd set of ujoints in that many weekends Thanks all

Ok, so we have a noise seemingly coming the transmission/T-case area at hwy speed that only happens under power. Correct? Now, What does it sound like? (Like bad U-joints is not decriptive enough for me!)What type of noise is it? What about frequency? Remember the driveshaft is turning at engine RPM any U joint noise or vibration will be at a high freq. 2000 rpm is 33 1/3 turns per second. More clues please!
