What diesel engine do you plan on dropping into the 89 Trooper?

I have an 86 C223T that i am removing from a complete donor vehicle with 169K , very clean body and engine wise-but the interior suffered a major fire hence the need for the swap. Plus i wanted the 4 door rather than the two door. I have a post on the Sale Forum if anyone needs any parts-doors-panels-etc.

So its been a long summer, but i am finally back to working on this project. I have posted a few pictures of the diesel engine removal process, took a little longer than i thought but its out. Next step is to remove the gasser from the 89 . Heres the
link
to the pics. I am planning on replacing the water pump, timing belt and clutch assembly when i put it all back together. However, any added advice is greatly appreciated, cause i sure dont want to put this thing together, only to have something fail that i could have replaced while the engine was out. Thanks in advance,
J

That's a beaut
Nice score.
So that's what the C223T looks like out of the vehicle.
Good luck, this looks like a fine project.

So i went to drop in the c223 and the motor mounts are very different than the gas version! the diesel has two bolts per mount and the gas has one, right in the center on each plate. hmmm. so i guess the question is, can i use the mounts from the gas block on the diesel block? do they have the same threading? and will it be enough of an anchor going from two bolts to one? if this fails it looks like i will be needing to get the diesel motor frame mounts from somewhere- anyone got two spares?

If I recall correctly, you had both trucks, complete, at the beginning of the project? Which mount parts are still in your possession? There are 'legs' that bolt to the engine blocks and there are the mounts themselves, the rubber isolator with the steel plates on each side for attaching between the block legs and the frame pad.

Do you still have the rubber mount from the diesel? The diesel and gas rubber mounts do differ, but at least with my conversion, they both bolted to the frame in the same manner. I'd think you would just need to use the mount from the diesel, not from the gas engine.

The frame mount pad may (should?) be the same between the gas and diesel frames - someone else would have to verify this for the C223 and 1989 chassis (it is for the 4JB1/4ZE1 in the 1988 chassis, anyway).

Since the part you're speaking of is removeable, unbolt the gas mounts and use the diesel mounts in their place if you can.

Yes, originally i had both vehicles but due to circumstances beyond my control i no longer have the diesel chassis. Which is really a shame since i thought, and it seemed everyone was of the same mind, that the motor mounts were interchangeable so i did not take the frame mounts off the diesel chassis before it went to the scrap yard. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> So what i have left are the rubber pads and metal legs that are on the diesel engine, the legs and rubber pads that are on the gasser, and the corresponding frame pads for the gasser. No frame pads for the diesel. This realization came late in the evening, and after discovering the mix up, we drove back to town to try another day. When we dropped in the diesel on the gas frame mounts, the 2 bolts on the diesel mounts did not match up with the 1 bolt hole on the gas frame mount. So maybe i can take the legs and rubber and pad off of the gas engine and bolt that into place on the diesel? hopefully having one bolt instead of two wont be disastrous. Either that or i need to find some unused frame mounts in the diesel chassis style, are they even removable without a cutting torch? Or fabricate a set...damn

Body Damage is Cool
THE FRAME MOUNTS ON THE TROOPER CHASSIS ARE THE EXACT SAME FRAME MOUNT ON ALL THE YEARS DSL OR GAS , JUST THE ENG CUSHIONS ARE DIFF, THE DSL CUSHION BOLTS TO THE DSL ENG BRACKET WITH TWO BOLTS AND IS MUCH THINNER THAN THE CUSHION ON THE GAS ENG , SO JUST USE THE DSL CUSHIONS ON THE DSL ENG BRACKETS AND IT WILL SIT RIGHT DOWN ON THE FRAME BRACKETS, AND YOU HAVE TWO 10MM BOLTS ON EACH CUSHION TO HOLE ITHEM TO THE FRAME PERCHES , TRANSMISSION MOUNTS FOR THE 5 SPD ARE VERY CLOSE , I HAVE DID TWO 89 CONVERSIONS WITH THE TURBO DSL AND HAVE NOT HAD A PROBLEM WITH ANY OF THE MOUNTS IN FACT IF YOU MIX THE TWO FRT DRIVESHAFTS I CAIN,T REMEMBER WHICH WAY IT WENT BUT BY MIXING THE TWO DIFF LENTHS THE DRIVE SHAFT EVEN BOLTED UP, BUT DID HAVE TO MODIFY, THE FRT HALF OF THE REAR DRV SHAFT , JERRY

Hey so i worked on the motor mount issue, thanks to everyones help, it all seems to come together nicely. However, i seem to have misplaced 2 of the power steering hoses in the midst of all the conversion. the steel loop hose that passes behind the air conditioning unit, and the hose that plugs into the back of the pump itself(hose #3 in diagram), coming from the steering gear box. I have both the rubber hoses that come from the reservoir but i do not have either of the hoses that plug into the gearbox. The gas steering components wont work as the pump was located on the opposite side of the engine and had no loop cooling(?)hose. So i guess the question is whether are not the extra length of steel hose is required, or can i just run the hose from the reservoir directly to the gear box? Aside from that, if anyone could help with locating/pricing/naming these hoses so i can find them would be incredibly helpful. Here is a diagram for ease of recognizing the components i am talking about.

Thanks in advance!
