lemme take a stab at this... With the crank/cam lined up with it's marks, the dizzy should point to the #4 plug. Here is a pic that shows you the marks to be lined up before you install the dizzy.
*FYI~ as the dizzy gear makes contact with the cam shaft gear the rotor will turn a bit. As long as it doesn't turn before it mates to the cam your gold!

The dizzy has *never* been out? Then I would hazzard a guess that it is probably OK.

But, if you have the valve cover off, then you probably should check. The marks are on the base of the dizzy shaft. One is on the gear, one is on the housing. This is all under the valve cover. You should be able to see them from either side of the gear on the cam. It will be tight, but it should be possible.

The bonus of doing this is that it will set a base timing that will allow the engine to start. Well, let's say, it take ignition timing out of the problem list.

You can approximate from where the rotor points relative to the cap, but adjustments in the dizzy position are enhanced at that point. i.e. A little movement of the shaft is multiplied by the length of the rotor. By lining up the marks at the gear end, it will be "closer".

Good Luck,
Michael

hey, i, well we, got her fired up. sounds great. the fuel pump is out, but it ran when i put gas in the carb.
in the beginning of this thread i mentioned that this truck had been setting with a blown headgasket for 4 or 5 years. also all the fuel lines were missing or atleast not connected to the pump. i guest at towhere the lines go on the pump. my ? now is i know which one is the return line but is it usually on the same branch as the inlet or outlet? right now i have the outlet on that same branch and the inlet on a seperate branch all alone. is that right or wrong?
ive drained the tank, changed filter, whatelse could i check before i buy a new pump?
thanks for the help.
oh by the way i couldnt find the pics or the links from your last posts.
