When I tried to replac the front brake-pads on my 98 Rodeo I noticed that the lug-nuts were extremely tight. I got the right front replaced but the left front had one of the nuts cross threaded and after it backed out about 3/4 to 1-1/2 turns the stud broke free and not just spins. I'm afraid to try the rear ones now. Never be the last new tire customer of the day....

Might be different on a 98, but I had to break the stud on my 86 Trooper. I left the wheel on tight with the other lugs, got the one as loose as I could, then grabbed it end on with a big 24 inch crescent wrench. Bent it one way, then the other until it finally snapped loose. I ended up swapping hub/rotor assemblies to fix it as I had two other broken studs besides, but I did eventually repair the old one with replacement studs. I tacked them in with a welder in order to get them to stay put. It has not been road tested though.

My wife just got back from the tire dealership that put on our new tires with their air guns racheted up on D8 Catapiller torque settings. She said the owner of the place started bad mouthing Isuzu Rodeos about always having these problems. I searched on here and I couldn't find very many posts concerning Rodeo wheel-studs/nuts stripping out. I loosened the front lug nuts myself (all but the one that stripped) and those things were harder to loosen than the lugs on the big 5-ton trucks I drove in the Army! You guys heard of very many wheel stud problems?

....OH Yeah, I forgot to mention that on top of the bad mouthing Rodeo lugnuts they broke the wheel sensor for the anti-locking brake system....! I thinking how much more can they screw-up after the third visit?

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Actually, when I got my snowflakes put on my 90 trooper, Firestone stripped out 8 studs and then charged me for new ones. They also said that it was a common Isuzu problem. I was thinking to my self.. of all the time I've spent reading this forum thats something I've never heard about..

Oh yeah... the alloy they used on the studs seems to suck pretty bad. Put an impact wrench on 'em and they are pretty much guaranteed to strip. OFF or ON ... doesn't matter.

My first tire change at one of the chain tire stores netted me TWENTY FOUR lugs and wheel nuts needing replacement.

I was lucky though, the store RE-IMBURSED me for the repair. It cost them $411 bucks (at a shop of MY choosing) to have them studs replaced. More than half that was just for the studs and lugs. (and I got a free bearing re-pack outta the deal) I didn't pay that much for the four tires!

Went back there a few years ago to get another set of tires. SAME TECH is there! This is like 4 years after the first set. He remembered me... I stood there and watched him remove and install the lugs BY HAND.

Some shops around here charge extra $$$ if they have to do it by hand. (minds outta the gutter, boys!)

I did end up givin' the tech a nice tip though, he was real careful this time! BTW, if when the tech starts working on yer rig, you casually let him see you pull a $20 outta yer billfold/pocket/bankroll and put it in the top pocket of yer shirt, he's likely to do a bit better job for ya.

Why are these places using an air impact wrench to install the lug nuts anyway Those things have a listed torque setting for a reason. You'd figure a place in the business of installing tires would know that

Body Damage is Cool
Every tire shop I have ever been to uses impact guns to get the lugs off and on.I had my trooper in there once , but didn't have any get stripped , either I was lucky , or they knew to turn down the torque settings I can tell you when I get my new rims and tires on , I am doing it myself , and no impact wrench , just by hand

I had to replace 8 studs after getting my new tires. Fronts were easy. The back ones were a PITA.
