Well, it finally died. I had to get a vehicle ASAP so having the engine rebuilt or replaced was not a viable option. I went and bought a car tonight for commuting/carpooling purposes. The question is what should I do with the Trooper? I really don't have the money to invest in a new engine. The place where I bought my car suggested that I donate it to the Kidney foundation. Any other suggestions? Would parting it out on Ebay be worthwhile? Junkyard? Selling it as a parts vehicle? Thanks.

What does "died" mean? I wouldn't resort to a rebuilt motor as from what I could find they cost a fortune (~3,500.00) but it isn't like they are complex to fix.

Well it still runs so I guess the correct description would be that it's in the process of dying. At times it is quiet at idle, but open up any throttle and this loud metallic knocking/thrashing sound makes itself known. It's much louder than any lifter noise and I just replaced the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, and thermostat in the hope that it was the tensioner that was making all of the noise. It's not missing and there's no significant vibration, at least not yet. But driving it from my home to a shop less than five miles away was pretty unnerving in that I thought several times I was going to get stuck on some busy two lane roads. It's a shame about the engine as the rest of the vehicle's in relatively good shape.

Mike, I'm out it Harriman/Rockwood twice a week. If all else fails, I may take you up on your offer to adopt it, but for now, I'm still trying to figure things out. Thanks, Taro

Thanks Mike. I appreciate it. I'll let you know once I figure out what I'm going to do.

How is the oil pressure? If it is still good I would wonder about something broken in the valve train like a rocker arm or similar. Would think in a few minutes you could do a compression test and at least narrow it down to a specific cylinder. If it is just one cylinder pull the valve cover off on that side and take a look.

I was going to say I'm in tn and I'd take it off your hands but looks like I was beat to it.
