In the end, while absolute numbers are good to know, you are really more interested in how they compare between cylinders. Gauges vary in accruacy and I would rather see similar numbers, regardless of what the actual compression was. This means, do everything the same. But with all the plugs out, the starter spins the engine faster (less resistance) and with the throttle open, it makes sure each cylinder is full before it is compressed.

Exactly - it isn't so much about the exact number or method - we're just trying in this case to find what will hopefully be one cylinder which is dramatically different from the others.

Thanks to all for your help. I didn't get to work on it the last couple of nights. I was going to work on it last night after the game, but I would have woke up the neighbors warming up the Trooper. I hope to do the compression test this morning so I can finally get some numbers. Fox, I'll try to give you a call today. Taro

Jay, thanks for the link. Looks like Dan is only parting out the engine. Hopefully, what I need can be identified.

Well here are the numbers. This was done on a cold engine because by the time I tucked the kids and the wife into bed and then got all of the stuff off, the engine was cold.

I'm numbering the passenger side cylinders 1, 3, and 5 (starting from the front) and the driver's side cylinders 2, 4, and 6 (again, starting from the front). I probably have this backwards, but anyway...

Spark plugs 2 and 4 looked burned/crusty. Their coil passages had traces of oil. Spark plug 6 looked "normal," but there was an abundance of oil in the coil passage. Spark plugs 1, 3, and 5 all looked the same they looked somewhat burned, but less than #2 and 4, except the tips were white (too hot?). Their coil passages were dry.

The compression numbers were as follows:

#1-155 #2-160

#3-170 #4-140

#5-150 #6-160

Looks like both banks have problems. Any other thoughts?

BTW-the passenger side bank seems to be louder and I noticed that that side's camshaft pulley had about five degrees of play whereas the driver side bank's camshaft pulley did not have much play at all (when I was changing the timing belt that is). Thanks, Taro

The 140-170 difference is concerning, but...it should not be the cause of your noise.

I would almost suggest doing it again, just to see if the #'s come up to something more equal. I would squirt some oil in there too, just a bit, to see if that brings the numbers up. Was the engine warm? Not hot, but warm.

Have you looked at the oil? I am wondering if you have some rod bearing problems. That, would be a semi-relatively easy fix. Probably something you can do yourself. It depends upon how bad the damage is, but you might be able to get away with slipping new bearings in.

I'd recheck it with a warm engine.

Think the pax side valve cover needs to come off to check the camshaft for wear and stuff. The Camshaft pulley shouldn't have any play at all.

Thanks guys. I'll try it again on a warm engine and change the oil while I'm at it tonight. Fox, I was hoping to have something more definitive before asking for your help, but if you're up for another compression test and seeing what's under the passenger side valve cover, your more than welcome to swing by.
