noisy power steering pump? #711434 03/30/06 11:22 PM

i have just replaced timing chain sprockets and belts etc.and when i got everything together i noticed an intermittent rattle from the power steering pump area. The idle pulley rotates with ease, took everything off and thought a little packing would do the trick but no avail. now its getting worse. Is there bearings inside the psp pump or pulley itself that would make the rattle noise.'86 2wd 22r ext cab with a long bed 164k. thanx for any help given

You might try to tighten the bolt in the middle of the pully, I know last time I changed belts, I forgot that one and it made a hell of a racket. Other than that I'd say it's time to R&R the pump, it ain't that hard, IIRC the pump kit is about $50 from the stealer.

Also the FMS sticky'd here might be helpful.

If you decide to rebuild the PS pump here is a great direction guide with photos. Got it from someone else on this board.

Glad to see my site still running
I'm sure yours is a 4 cyl. The site I made was for a 3.0 V6.

Knowing Toyota, I'll bet that alot of the same info would apply though. Good Luck.

Opps yeah I didn't notice Jeddi wrote in his post it was a 22 RE engine. Sorry. I just found Staceman's guide so helpful I try to share it with people who ask about rebuilding the pump.

jeddi--- My PS pump is noisy about once a week....I have a leaker and I just fill it up and she gets quiet again smile My ps fluid is always clean cause the new stuff goes in the top and the bad stuff leaks out the bottom. Maybe yours is simply low.

Yeah buddy, the first time she saw dirt after I picked her up in Tucson a few years ago. Pretty clean huh??

Here's a pic from 2 week-ends ago with the TTORA group. PS ZUK, the coils did great, alot of questions on those and my rear bumper. All camp gear didn't lower the rear end at all
