Getting the Wheeling Fever
Wondering if someone can help with the torque value for the four nuts that hold on the rear drums for a 95 Sportage. I don't usually work on my girlfriend's vehicle (so no shop manual) but I offered to change out her pads/shoes.

Thanks for the info!
Bryan

Good question because the FSM doesn't say.

When I did my rear brakes I just tightened them like I would any wheel lug nut with a star wrench. That figures to around 70 - 80 ft/lbs.

1998 Sportage - Gone.
2004 Honda Civic Coupe.
2007 Suzuki Grand Vitara - She got it.

I recommend also, that you clean the mating surfaces with a wire brush before you place the drum back on the axle, and clean the studs with brake cleaner, rub a light oil on the mating surface to keep them from rusting together.

Slap the drum on and put a dab of blue grade loctite on the threads then torque the nuts to the same spec you would the wheel, and in a 4-lug torque sequence.

Trust me you don't want this coming loose, as the drum also has all your wheel studs pressed in, and guess what happens if the drum comes off, you guessed it, the wheel comes off.

The good news is, that if some friggin garage jockie forgets to do these steps and you loose said wheel on the road, those rock grabbing rear lower shock mounts will now double as skis for your easily controlled 3 wheel ride to the edge of the road as you curse for being too lazy to mess with it yourself and let the dealer do warranty work instead
